Fabia 1.4 mpi 2002 throttle body cleaning

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm pretty new here haven't posted before, or that I remember but this site is always my first goto for information when I need to repair my fabia and up untill now I've always managed to find the info I needed in the archives :)

anyway, my car lately 1.4 mpi 2002, as been dipping when coming from revs to idle, occasionally it will stall, and it does seem to hard gradually got worse.. it threw up codes

p0172 and p0101 a couple of nights ago, I've cleaned the map sensor with electrical spray.. to be fair it looked clean, but I also noticed inside the throttle body around the outside of the butterfly was a black circle of carbon .. I'd say fairly bad .. so what I wanted to go was clean the throttle body, I've watch a few videos on YouTube showing how it's cleaned ect.. take it off clean back on.. with a new seal..., But I've done a bit of googling and some posta saying it needs re alignment with vcds, also looking in my Haynes book it says it replacing the throttle body it needs resetting at a Skoda dealer... So my question is, can I get away with cleaning it and not re aligning it, I'm pretty skint and the moment and can't afford the cable or software, but I also don't want to take it off clean it and find my car won't run lol then I can't get to work... Any info advise would be greatly appreciated...

thanks, Mike

I have the same engine. I took my throttle body off and cleaned it with carb cleaner spray and it worked fine when I put it back on. Maybe I was just lucky, I don't know.

Ah, thanks for the prompt reply, sorry for the typos , written on my phone, I have seen a few old posts saying the same as you, might just have to go for it on a day off and hope for the best :)). Thanks again

Also I saw someone saying leaving the ignition on for 60 seconds and then switching off for 10 seconds but not removing the key resets it.. not sure how true it is...

As far as I can remember (it was several years ago) I was careful not to move the butterfly valve when I cleaned it. If you need the gasket part number, it's 036133161C.

Trouble is most of the gunk looks on the outer sides of the butterfly, so I'd imagine once cleaned there would be movement... 😕 ... Ummm what to do lol , vcds lite is 99 .. alot of money for a job that might not sort my issue anyway.. then there's trying to get a cable off eBay... Might phone a garage make sure they can re align if it doesn't run once cleaned... Umm lol

Yeah it's a bit of a risk. It might even be that your issue is not even the throttle body but some other fault. You can get cheap code readers on ebay that are good enough for basic fault codes.

Looks like it would be suitable.

I just have this stand-alone one which works fine...

Clean it but don't disconnect the cable. That way you shouldn't need an adaptation right away. Don't move the butterfly though.

Thanks for the replies all, well I got it off and cleaned it, I did push the butterfly open, o had to, there was carbon all around the edges of the butterfly which I couldn't get off.. after putting back on I managed to get someone to run a vcds tba on it, and it does seem to be idling alot better now and seems to have a bit more go now... Right onto the next problem , gunk on oil cap ! Losing water slowly.... Will make another post ! Thanks again
