Anybody know the best size set up for the MK1 Octavia VRS?

The one I bought last weekend has 225/40/R18 fitted, which I presume comes from some Audi, as it has the logo centre caps.

Am not sure if these are too big and lowering the economy slightly...

I'm in the process of wondering whether to buy some 18" rims for my Mk1.  I currently have some 17" Pro Race 1.2 on at the moment and it drives really well.  I bought them directly from the factory a few months ago as most of the research I did said that 17" is the way to go.  I know that putting some 18" rims on will affect the ride and possibly the fuel economy but considering mine's a Stage 2 car I really shouldn't be bothered by that.  Plus, I prefer the look of the 18" wheel compared to the 17".

When I had my original Mk1 back in the day, I did have some Audi 18" reps on and they were terrible.  They were way too heavy, too wide and they killed the handling.  I put the 17" Spiders back on and it was so much better.

If I do put some 18" wheels on, they will be a decent make and need to weigh less than the Skoda Spiders.  I'll probably be selling my Team Dynamics wheels soon if you're interested.

Do you know the exact fitment details for the 17" alloys to fit the VRS though? Currently, the 18's on the car feel horrible, but of course I understand the cosmetic appeal as they look lovely how they sit just under the arches. I have read very good reviews on the team dynamics, so keep me updated if you sell them. I bought my VRS as a back up car to my 2ZZ T - Sport, but love the VRS so may keep it. The guy who owned it before me has made a lot of **** ups though, which I am in the process of rectifying. I know I only paid £980, but to me a car is my pride and joy so everything needs to be spot on.

The original Spiders specs are 17 x 7J ET38 5x100.  You could do a lot worse than fitting a set of the original wheels as the car was set up for them.  However, if the previous owner has badly altered any of the suspension, or the original setup is worn out then it'll never feel great.

The wheels I have on at the moment are 17 x 8j ET48 5X100.  I'm running a 10mm spacer on the front to clear the suspension but the rears are fine.  They have the correct centre bore so there's no need for any spigot rings.

OK if you see a set of alloys that will fit with the clearance for £150 or under buzz me a message! Not bothered about condition as long as not buckled. I will get them powder coated anyway. Wish I had the cash to splurge on a new set but money talks and have not long had my original car (Corolla T - Sport) taken off road as someone took the side out in the night and didn't leave any details! Shame as I put close to 3k into modifying her.

Is that your car in the pics? Looks neat!!

Well, "sort of"; vRS estate (and hatch on some markets) had 6.5x16 5x100 ET42 fitted with 205/55R16W as standard. No mk1 had standard 18" wheels though.

It is my car, yes.  It's a work in progress and has a few bits that need tidying up cosmetically.  It's my daily driver so gets all the abuse a family car has thrown at it but on the whole, it scrubs up nicely.

I'd forgotten about the 16" wheels Ken.  I think the Mk1 Octavia looks a tad 'underwheeled' on the 17" Spiders from certain angles and the 16" version is really lost in the arches.  Personal opinion though and some will not agree.

If you're looking to fill your wheelarches on 16" wheels, you could try 6Jx16 ET31 5/100 57.1 steel rims from the Audi TT/S3 instead of the standard 6.5Jx16 ET42 5/100 57.1 rims.

This will move the centre of the rim/tyre outwards by 11mm each side, so that your front and rear track is increased by 22mm.

Alcar 9590 (this is a 16-hole design from an early Audi TT/S3)

https://www.oponeo.co.uk/steel-wheel/alcar-kfz-9590#21140674

mytyres are listing the Alcar 9590 steel rims for £54.30. mytyres are usually cheaper than oponeo for steel rims. However, it's easier to link a photo of the steel rim to oponeo...hence the link.

The Alcar 9590 is an exact copy of the Audi OEM steel rim. Alcar are made in Switzerland. It's a 16-hole design, as seen in the photo on oponeo.

The advantages of running a 205/55R16 tyre on a narrower 6J rim instead of a wider 6.5J rim is improved comfort, as the sidewalls can flex more easily on the narrower rim, and more protection for the rim from kerbing damage as the sidewalls bulge out a little bit more.

Here's 6Jx16 ET35 5/100 57.1 steel rims from the Skoda Scala (these are 14-hole designs as shown by the photo of the Alcar 6664 steel rim on oponeo)

VW 6664 (£45 on oponeo)

Magnetto 2066 (£41 on opone)

Alcar 6664 (£42.30 on mytyres)

https://www.oponeo.co.uk/steel-wheel/alcar-kfz-6664#21140766

There's also 6Jx16 ET40 5/100 57.1 steel rims from the Skoda Scala (these are 14-hole designs as shown by the photo of the Alcar 6977 on oponeo)

Alcar 6977 (£41.90 on mytyres)

Got some nice continental tyres yesterday for £20 each, only covered less than 2k miles (205/55/16).

Any idea if the MK4 Golf GTI wheels will be a straight fit on the MK1 VRS? The ones I am looking at near me I believe are 5x100, 6J ET38.

According to online, the Octavia VRS 16" wheels should be 6.5Jx16 ET42.

Hope someone can help here. There are a couple of sets near me that claim to be off MK4 GTI wheels, but both look different styles.

Either way, anybody have a set of 16" wheels that my tyres could go on, let me know.

They will fit your car as the ET is the same as the original 17" Spiders.  They'll be quite narrow though and although the tyre width is the same as the original Spiders, the rim will poke out less and won't fill the arches as well.  I you aren't wanting to achieve a wider stance, then they should be okay.

Below is a screen shot from Will They Fit based on the measurements you mentioned.

Hope this is of some use.

Oh right, according to a site I was looking at online, the 16" MK1 VRS wheel is ET42 not ET38. This is where I get confused.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was referring to the 17" Spider which I'm pretty sure is ET38, I wouldn't know about the 16" Spider as it's not something I've come across before.

Just out of interest, why a 16" wheel versus the 17"?

Its not so much 16 vs 17, its just that they were near me and there are a couple of sets of GTI wheels for around £30-40 which I'm looking at getting.

So if I get either set I can get them powder coated for £30 a corner. Thats pretty much brand new tyres and wheels for £200.

My budget of around £200 at the time didn't find me much nearby that was decent. Yes, nice alloys, but can't understand why people fit budget tyres on performance alloys.

That's fair enough then.

As for cheap tyres, I know what you mean.  I searched for ages when looking for my second had wheels and passed on a few sets due to the unbranded or mismatched tyres.  In the end I found the wheels I wanted with some Michelins on that meant I didn't have to buy four new tyres or drive round in a state of worry about heading off into a ditch each time it rained.
