Losing Coolant regularly - 1.4tsi

Featured Replies

Hi all.  Hope someone can help.

We have a 61 plate 1.4tsi  with 140k miles on it.

We are losing coolant - No obvious signs of a leak anywhere that I can easily see.   When I top it up, it is fine for a week or two, then the warning light comes on again, and sure enough it it pretty much all gone.

Is this likely to be the water pump (I've done a little research) - Could it be anything else?  Any idea what is it likely to cost to fix?

We have had the car from new, and would like to keep it running for a little longer -- so not keen on replacing it just yet -

Thanks.

If it's not leaking externally it can only be going internally. Most likely head gasket. Could be into an oilway, so you'd see it with emulsified oil under the oil cap and rising oil levels. Could be into the chamber and being burned off. That's likely to see excess cylinder pressure into the cooling system, especially as it gets worse. In the meantime you might notice misfiring as the mixture is weakened. An excess of water will wash the bores and chamber so you may see a clean piston crown on the affected cylinder if you get and endoscope down the plug hole.
