Door Trim Nasty Deep Scratch

Featured Replies

Hi All,

See image. I took a trip to the local dump and unfortunately scratched the door trim in the process 😡

I'm hoping i can just snap off that plastic and order/replace it with a new one... anyone have any ideas if this is the case? Thanks.

It's of a Kodiaq L&K rear passenger side door is affected.

Cheers!

Those trims are indeed removable and replaceable.

However, you might be pleasantly surprised how good a job a mobile smart repairer can do, it would certainly be worth ringing around a few for quotes.

That's great news thanks.

If the part is reasonably cheap, then i'll just go with that. But if its quite a bit i'll go the other way.

Cheers,

Koodiac

Your dealer should be able to give you a price and part number.

Or, you can also try here, at least to try and identify the correct part...

Great advice.  Don't just limit yourself to motor trade specialists though; there's a fair few companies who will repair near enough any hard surface, such as kitchen tops, bath panels, sinks, etc etc.  Most are national with local franchises and they make a good profit from snagging new build houses where items have been damaged.  We had a bath panel repaired in our new build and it was a great job.

I would also advise you to sit down when getting prices of the trim panel.  IME, some prices are ridiculous for trim parts!

oh boy! A cost of £136.99 and I tried 2 dealers whom said the same, if you needed a complete door card that's circa £400.. ouch.

I think i'll try the latter suggestion of getting someone in to complete the repair. I'm currently not in any rush to get it done, but it will need doing for when the car goes back to the leasing company.

Gutted though 😑.

I've never understood the need for extortionate spare parts pricing.

Making decent margins on the product, attachments and accessories, fair enough, but spare parts are to maintain the product we've already invested in.

By being greedy all they're doing is deterring people from returning.

Because they make more on the spares than they do on the vehicles

They have to make profit somewhere..

I know £136 is crazy for a piece of trim but at least you can buy it. Alternative is to check round breakers yards.

Dog put is claws thru the only piece of cushioned armrest on door of Renault Clio a few days before I was due to sell it. Unlike your car, all parts on the Clio are not interchangeable therefore it meant a new door card at £230. ( everything cheap hard plastic ). I found a breaking yard in Edinburgh with the same car and bought a replacement door card for £20 !!!  I bit their hand off.

I think its going to be a hard find to get it from the breakers - as I have the L&K, the part i need is going to be a different match to that of the other model range. Piano black as they call that finish,

But still £136 is a rip off - appreciate that they need to make money but not ripping us off in the process, it probably cost's less than a £5 to make. Luckily we have the OEM market for some of the usual wear and tear parts which at least gives us a choice of original or oem.

Has anyone worked out how much the car would cost if it were rebuilt using just part costs for any car out of interest? Double the car sale price i would imagine.

It would be somewhere between 5 and 10 times the cost..

Typically we sell Cylinder head Gaskets to Manufacturers - for between £3 and £5 - they will be like £50 - £75 from dealer spares

Then seals - we will sell for around £2 to £3 depending on size and materials - they will sell for £15 to £20

BrakePads - will sell for £6 to 8 a set - and retail for £40 to £60..

I know around 15 years ago - PSA 1.9 Diesel Engine - fully assembled with ALL ancilliaries - ready to go into the car on the line - cost PSA 950 Euros - the same from a dealer (if you could have bought it) was £4500 +  would have been difficult to buy with all ancilliaries connected..

Wow! cheers for that, mind boggling mark ups there. Someone is truly making tidy profits, leaves a sour taste though.

i'm all for reasonable, don't get me wrong as we all need to make a living, pay bills etc. no wonder insurance keeps going up if parts costs as much!

Don't know about cars today, but I bought a new Yamaha motorcycle in 2005 for £4700, which I subsequently wrote off in 2007. The insurance  assessor who came to view told me that if I were to buy all the parts separately that made up the bike, it would cost over £30,000.

Frightening isn't it !!

It's nothing new. In the mid 90's the plastic prongs that connects the bulb to the headlight had snapped on my Fiat Tempra.

Took it the my local dealer thinking the part would be about £5ish and labour about £30ish. Knew it was bad when the parts guy not only took in an audible sharp intake of breath but actually stepped back from the computer.

£600 before vat. Apparently it was Fiat's policy for such repairs to replace the wiring loom also.

Took it to a Lucas garage who repaired it for £25.

I cannot make out what the actual part is that needs replacing, is it something that could be 3d printed, or is it too big for that?

Don't give me that. I don't see many poor car manufacturers.

There is plenty of margin in a new car sale to not have to make 500% on a plastic door trim.

Maybe you should look again

Ford is nearly Bankrupt

GM sold out in Europe to PSA

Lots of mergers - because there is no money

Most of the supply chain operates on less that 5% profit

This virus may well see off a few brands and suppliers

Parts Dept Manager at VW dealer told me today that he has 10-20% profit margin.  Today he earned himself some biscuits on top of that as he came up trumps with parts/labour prices for me.  Anyway, based on the prices I've received this week to retrofit a reverse camera I would surmise that the profit margin is dictated at dealership level, not the manufacturer/supplier.  Dealer 1 - £500.  Dealer 2 - £720.  Dealer 3 -  I switched off when the first number was a 9!

Another example.  Michelin PS4 tyres (supply and fit); Dealer 1- £88.  Dealer 2 - £167.  Now I appreciate different geo's will have different suppliers and with tyres the price fluctuates on a daily basis.....but ~100% price difference!

That's some disparity, no?

Ford has nearly been bankrupt for as long as I've been alive.

The brand we're focusing on here however, Skoda, have increased their operating profit every year  for the last decade.

Charging £140 for a piece of polished plastic they are. Struggling they are not.

You haven't been binge watching Start Wars by any chance.....
