Fabia 1.0 MPI - Underpowered?

Hi all.

 

Does any of you own a mk3 Fabia with the 60hp 1.0 MPI engine or have you ever driven one?

 

Is it underpowered at all?

 

Or is it adequate for round the town usage?

It doesn’t have lot of power, but is fine around town, especially if not too many people In car, or cargo in boot

 

Not best choice for motorways or if you drive with car full.

Obviously if you live in hilly area, a bigger engine will help.

It would be much better if Skoda made a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated three cylinder petrol engine instead of the 1.0 litre naturally aspirated three cylinder petrol engine. Without a turbo, a 1.0 litre petrol engine only has a maximum torque of about 95Nm.

 

Peugeot have shown the way with their 1.2 litre three cylinder petrol engine. This engine without a turbo produces around 118Nm of torque coming in at a relatively low 2,750rpm. The 100PS turbo version of this engine produces over 200Nm of torque at a much lower 1,750rpm.

 

By comparison, the Skoda Fabia 1.0 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with its 95Nm of torque is really wimpy...and you feel that when you drive it. There's no getting away from the fact that 95Nm of torque in a modern heavy car just doesn't cut the mustard. And with the smaller Skoda engine, maximum torque doesn't occur until about 3,500rpm. Even if the top gear was a relatively low 20mph/1,000rpm this would mean that you would be out of the engine's power band unless you were travelling at least 70mph in top gear. If the 1.2 petrol engine was pulling a 20mph/1,000rpm top gear then you would be in the power band from a much lower 55mph.

 

Manufacturers shouldn't even be allowed to make engines that don't pull well at low revs. It causes drivers to have to adopt a high revving driving style causing a lot of unnecessary pollution and wasted fuel.

Skoda / VW did make a 1.2 N/A engines with 60ps. Then stopped, then started again then stopped again.

What they build now are there to try before you buy.

When retired, the normally-aspirated 3-cylinder 12-valve 1.2 produced 70PS with 112Nm peak torque. It was no rocket, but it was a responsive, reliable engine and had enough poke in the Polo/Fabia/Ibiza for both town and motorway driving. Shame they didn't TSI that design.

Lots of people had polos/fabias/etc with the old 55hp 1.2 engine which has 10% more torque than the current 1.0 MPI 60 has.

If most of your journeys were start stop town based, you'd notice no difference to a TSI unless you drive like a tit. Motorways, fine but will take much more time to get up to speed.



 

For a family car 90ps in the estate version of the Fabia would be reasonable.

I have the 110 and it is nice with two of us +camping gear at motorway speeds.

I test drove a Citigo which I believe had the 60ps engine and it was just about ok

but I would never have bought one.

Watch a few of the You Tube road tests, the german review with an estate version was very open

and honest.
