Puncture while in lockdown!

Featured Replies

As the title, my tyre pressure warning pinged yesterday, had a quick look and couldn't see anything so pumped it back up. Then today same again and this time a proper look found a nail in the edge of the tyre! So two questions, one can a puncture be repaired on the edge of the tyre? Secondly what tyre places are open now everywhere is shut? Before anyone says anything I work in a supermarket. Should also say based near Rochdale if anyone knows anywhere particular local.

Garages doing essential repairs should still be open, and I think that must include tyre places. I got a new tyre fitted on Tuesday lunchtime no bother.

Get on the phone in the morning to see what's open locally to you.

Generally if the puncture isn't in the central area of tread they won't want to repair it; depends what you mean by 'on the edge'. Got a photo?

If its on the shoulder or sidewall it is highly unlikely they'll repair it.

Garages are allowed to remain open.

I agree. Quite less probable it can be repaired. 2 tyres to change if the other one is already a bit aged. Hard luck... 😐

Mmm cheers for the help, no picture, it's right on the shoulder so will probably be a new one then, and it's done 6000 miles so that will be two then 😠

Had an email from Halfords today saying that they will come out to you to fit new tyres.

I was concerned about very same thing. Tyre dealers round where I live have all shut of their own accord.

Same around me but...a few have advertised that they will fix/maintain the vehicles of key workers

I'm trying to think of everything they could get wrong, and its quite a list. Halfords would be my last choice. I'm basing it on personal experience - I took advantage of an oil change offer once and they managed to break the engine cover and say nothing.

@Chrisis, just seen you are in Rochdale.  Give Rochdale tyres a call, they are in a unit near the train lines in some old workshops.  It doesn't look much but we punctured on the M62, going over Saddlworth a few months back and I managed to get the car to these guys. Couldn't have asked for more, great service.  Took about 15-20 mins for them to plug the puncture and rebalance the wheel and only charged us £10.

My wife's Fabia had a cable clip right in the edge of the tread on the shoulder. A mate at a tyre garage said it could be repaired but they weren't able to as they only did the plug repairs - he said to find a garage who does vulcanised rubber repairs. Funnily enough my local garage, less than a mile away did, and repaired with no fuss.

You may need to be classed as a 'key worker' with a letter from work as some garages are restricting work to this group at the moment.

You must `speak as you find`...and you have.

I, on the other hand, have found my local Halfords to be full of knowledgeable, courteous and helpful individuals.

`Luck of the draw` I suppose.
