Which should I get - tsi vs tdi & which gearbox?

Featured Replies

OK. May be something to get clarified from sellers.

- L&K, it's the 'TOP' configuration with the maximum standard equipment. However there can be some options.

- Busyness is a 'middle' configuration mainly dedicated to workers, who spend a lot of time in they car and drive for high mileage per year. This is really less equipped than L&K

To sum up. It's either a L&K or a Business version. It cannot be a L&K Business. Few questions to ask to check easily, which version each car is:

L&K version has:

- Vented leather seats

- Deicing wind shield

- 3-zones A/C

whereas Business version has:

- Textile seats

- Dual-zone A/C

- No electric boot

both seem to be LK versions, not sure why they have mixed in the “business” name however.

- 3 zone ac

- electric booth (diesel has virtual pedal for booth)

- vented leather seats

- on diesel it says LK on the actual car next to the front doors and on the leather seats

- on petrol it only says LK on the leather seats

the dealer of petroleum is calling Škoda today to ask if the car has vet or dry gearbox.

if it would be dry, should I walk away and take diesel instead? Is the issue that risky?

I would say no to that.........you'll have a warranty anyway, and if true what bap33 said, the dry box issues should be sorted.

Maybe worth looking at extended warranties if still concerned.

Maybe also start another thread in General Automotive forum asking for feedback from folk with this specific age and type of gearbox.

Good luck. :)

@Nathalie Don't worry. I've made further research. The problem on DSG DQ200 gearboxes only happened on cars built from 2008 to 2013, and mainly on 1.8 TSI 160HP engines, which means :

- The problem has been fixed since 2014.

- The problem only concerned Superb Mk2.

Thus, the should not be specific issue ont he DSG7 gearbox, if you chose the TSI180... ;)

THANK YOU so much everybody for your comments and help on this issue. I am so happy I found this forum :)

Being my very first car and quite some money I’m so nervous if making the “wrong” decision. But now I really feel that I’ve made a well grounded choice, the petrol car. The car has warranty from Škoda until 2021-06 and dealership offers a 36 month warranty also when buying from them, of course not including “minor faults”.

On Thursday the dealer will come with the car to me. They are 1h motorway away from my town and as I don’t have a car it’s hard to go there. I’m allowed to test drive it, check it through and everything before we sign papers and if I’m happy they will leave it with me.

Now I need to read up on what to check for while test driving and visually check for :) If you have any tips on the subject I’ll gladly take them.

thank you again everybody it was much appreciated.

DSG. Why do manuals still exist?

Petrol in every circumstance (apart from maybe towing?) in my opinion.

Maybe even the "Superb GTE" as I call it, but full electric would make more sense.

Diesel is horrible, noisy and in some cases has caused unbearable rattling issues in the cabin.

I agree.........but a lot of folk seem to still prefer manual gearboxes, particularly in the uk......

All the usual arguments exist I guess......

RE DQ200 DSG,

Sorry but members here really need to say what changes happened to them in 2017, or why they should be sorted?

They should maybe commit to memory what they read in the past and what they post.

They should all be sorted.  But are not.

The difference is just they are only 3 years old or less since 2017.

The Clutch Slip Issue still was affecting some in 2017,2018 and 2019.

Then the 1.5TSI EVO's still had some with cutting out / loss of drive and software updates required.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/473213-another-dsg-recall-today-sorry-if-already-posted

So 'service campaign 34H5' was just on some 2013-2015, started in 2017.

and the Australian Recall from 2019 on just some up to 2016.

but that does not mean Skoda / VW had the DQ200 DSG's sorted out even though they have had 11 years to do that.

Skoda produce over 2,200 DQ200 DSG' s a day.  Maybe 2,180 are perfectly OK.   So why do Skoda make getting warranty cover / repairs so difficult on the 20 a day bad ones.

(Anyones guess in in the next year or in the future a service campaign gets called on 2017-2020 DQ200 DSG's because VW are in denial mode for as long as they get away with things.)

If it was only 20 a day that would be 'Simply clever'.  Vorsprung durch techniq.     Lets pretend we advance in technology.

Re GTE's,

and Superb iV and the Skodas that will be coming with a 1.0 TSI or a 1.5 TSI and a DSG, they will be Light Hybrids so that is Vorsprung Durch Technik as far as DSG's go,

they move off in electric, and the 2.0 TSI with Plug in Hybrid have a DSG to suit which is going to help there as well.

Sorry but I don't see particular inconsistency between my 2 posts.

As a non English speaker, I've mainly read french articles. Sorry, nobody's perfect...

What I found on french automotive websites states roughly, what I tried to sum up

"The problem on DSG DQ200 gearboxes only happened on cars built from 2008 to 2013, and mainly on 1.8 TSI 160HP engines, which means (Editor's note: What follows is my understanding) :

- The problem has been fixed since 2014.

- The problem only concerned Superb Mk2."

But of course, I did not read all the results in the ~10 pages found by Google (in french). I focused on those who seemed to me the most trustworthy.

"As far as I know, on MY2017 S3, DSG7 was only available on TSI 150 / TSI 180 / TDI 120 / TDI 150.

DSG7 became available for TDI 190 only on MY2018... at least in France. I don't know what about the TSI 220, that you guys can buy in the UK (or in Belgium too), Lucky you"

I don't read any contradiction with what I've written above... The first post doesn't mean that MK3 has never been equiped with DQ200, which would be totally faulse of course.

Now, of course. I don't pretend to know THE absolut truth. As many others here (I hope so at least), I'm here to read, share, learn, and sometime explain if I can (crazy me!).

As an Asian proverb says: "experience is a lantern, which only lights up the path we have traveled", meaning, that I can't know what I haven't read or been told yet.

Thus, thank you so much for making me aware of such problems on  MK3. As a Mandela said: "I never lose. Either I win, or I learn". ;)

This being said, since such problems are linked to manufacturing batches, which can be dedicated to specific countries, depending on the production site location too, it may explain why it can seem to happen less in France... But one also have to consider that Superb 3 is not one of the most sold car in France 🙄. This is another reason why I come on this forum, which is much more active, than the french ones on Superb 3. ;)

Then I apologize, if I misled anyone. @Nathalie Sorry! 2 steps forward, one step back in your thoughts to decide which one will suit you the best. 🤔

Mk3 Superbs with 1.4 TSI engines are part of the Service Campaign '34H5' in some cases. and if there 1.8tsi engines from between 2013-2015 they can be part of it,

as are other models with 1.2 TSI's, and that is across the VW, Skoda, SEAT and Audi's with DQ200's. Also 1.6TDI's.

Any can have the Slipping Clutch Issue as well since Euro 6 engines were introduced.

2.0 TDI & 2.TSI's never got paired with DQ200 DSG.
