Hi all, hope you are ok. Question I have. Today I have put some movies on the USB stick and SD card but  unfortunately it didn't work in the car. do I need a special software or movies just work on the DVD player?? I have a 2017 Octavia with 9.2'' Columbus system. Thank you and stay safe.

IIRC it only works with ‘proper’ DVD’s.

A film which would come from a shop on a disc and not as a file. 🎞️

thank you mate

Convert files to ".MKV" files.

Download "Handbrake" to do this.

I do this - takes about 3 minutes per hour of video converting.

 Load file:-

Chapters tab - untick "Create chapter markers"

Subtitles tab - I delete "Foreign Audio Scan" and in Selection Behaviour select untick "Add Foreign Audio Scan" and "Burn-in Behaviour" select none then hit "Apply".

Audio tab - I leave alone as it seems to work well without any intervention from me.

Video tab - select "H264(264x64)" from the drop-down menu - I actually use "H264 Intel QSV" here but that may be just my computer - select "Constant Framerate" and "Same as source" from the drop-down menu - from "Quality" tick "Constant Quality" radio button - I move slider here to 20 which gives you a file about the same size as the one you are converting and is my preference.

Filters tab - I select "Off" from all drop-down menus of the two that are not already off.

Dimensions tab - I leave as is.

Summary tab - untick "Align A/V Start" and change "Format" to "MKV" from the drop-down menu

Hit "Start Encode" at the top and away you go.

You can also automatically name files and decide your output folder but these are fairly self explanatory.

Add converted files to an SD Card (my preference) or USB stick and Robert is your father's brother.

It sounds a lot of work but you can usually convert a watchable video of an hour's length in 3 minutes or less - ticking boxes and drop-down menu selection becomes second nature after a few conversions - I watch a lot (I mean all) TV quiz shows in my car and It takes about 3 minutes to convert an houror so of SD TV video - not sure about DVD files - but give it a try.

Really shouldn't have to do this as Columbus, by now, ought to be able to sort out automatically file formats but heigh ho - this is Skoda/VW for you - never make a job simple if a more difficult way is possible.

General corrections and bunging in bits I forgot.

That's a new one to me.

Will have to investigate further.

Just did one movie, it all seems to be fine converted, I will check if the file works in the car tomorrow. The only problem I have found is that the original file size is 1.44 GB and converted file size is 3.19 GB so it's quite large.

Never had DVD facility in a car before so i was all excited when I loaded up "Dr Strangelove" and it began to play on my system. The excitement lasted all of 30sec or until I started the engine and the DVD went off.

So when people say they can watch movies, have you overcome the rules where DVD's do not play when the engine is running?

Presumably you mean ‘when the car is moving?’

Unfortunately the file still doesn't work in the car ☹️ maybe I did something wrong when converting a file. I will have to try with a different movie. Thanks anyway.

Having never been in the habit of switching on my engine for anything else...

Just wondering what the purpose of in-car DVD is? The only benefit I have is I can finally play CD's which I haven't been able to do for years. At least music reproduction is better than via Digital radio, USB or heavens above, bluetooth.

The point being that it's the vehicle moving that inhibits the DVD playing rather than the starting of the engine. As it would be illegal to have the DVD playing whilst you drive, this is all by design.

The benefits? If you're parked up and want to watch a DVD.....

You can reduce the quality - a bigger output file than the original does not mean that the output file looks any better when played - go for the lowest, watchable, quality file size should be the same-ish or less than the original file

Unfortunately the file still doesn't work in the car. I have converted another movie last night and still no luck. Never mind maybe the file format is not supported by the infotainment system. Thank you anyway for your help. Stay safe.

One thing I forgot to add in my "Handbrake" mini - tutorial is to use the Preset  "General Fast 1080p 30" from the right hand preset panel. If this is not visible tick "Show Preset Panel" from the top menu item "Presets".

Then modify this as detailed in my earlier post.
