Squeak, front passenger side.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've asked about something related before but the behaviour has changed.

Our combi has a squeak when driving over bumps. It's worse when the car has been standing for a few days then goes away after about a couple of miles of driving.

Bushes drying out? I squirted silicon lube on them before (last year) but am now concerned it's something more fundamental. It's mot had been due but now deferred for 6 months.

Have this on my 13 plate Greenline Estate.

It's been investigated by Skoda, and they've found nothing!! It seems worse after being stood for some time (as you said) and in lower temperatures!! anything over 9 or 10 degrees C and it rarely happens!

As you said, going over bumps (even slow speed speed-bumps), seem more pronounced on the extension of the suspension ie: going over a hum-back bridge at 30-40mph

I've very interested to find out what it is...

Interesting! Is not noticed it before but it's happened twice in the time that the car has been standing for 5-6 days. For me, it was about 13 Deg last time I went out in it. I go over a level crossing about a mile from home and it did it over this and a little more driving into town ~3 miles. Left the car for 40 mins and driving back home, almost no squeak at all. When I got home, I tried bouncing that corner of the car and heard nothing.

I wondered whether the strut top/bushes are drying out.

There are no bumps or knocks at the same time.

I'll try bouncing it before I go out in it next time.

If it is temperate related, maybe it's some rubber bushing that is less flexible when cold and a bit of mechanical flexing as you drive causes it to warm up and quieten down.....?

It's just weird on mine that it started happening after I hit 105k miles

Only 49k here. 1.2 TSI on a 14 plate

Got something similar with my 15 plate Polo 1.4 TDI at 40k miles. Drop links and ARB bushes would be top of the list as possible culprits. Quite difficult to check if I'm honest. You can raise the car, then with a second jack, raise the base of the wishbone arm under the strut, just enough to take the pressure off the drop link. Loosen the drop link at the top (usually Allen or Star Drive bit) and 15mm spanner to stop it spinning. Squirt of PlusGas to lube and penetrate. With the arm detached, if the balljoint feels decidedly loose, then that's the culprit. The rubber bushes on the anti roll-bar itself, then I'd expect they'd be fine unless the car is high mileage.

Arms, my experience is Meyle HD kit is the dog's danglies, (4-year warranty). Avoid Cheap EBay imports, as you'll not just get a squeak but a clunk when they fail.

I've the same issue on my mark 2 Fabia. I suspect it's dried-out arb bushings, only happens in cold weather though, I precisely know when it's above or below 7C lol. What I did was taking the front wheels off and spraying all suspension connections with silicon lube. I should have done one by one and then drive to isolate the bad one, but I was a bit lazy... This solved it, although probably only temporarily.

Must be a MK2 thing because this also happens to me regardless of the weather. Started happening at 110k! It sounds like going over a bumper something is scraping from underneath. No matter how slow I go.

Check the top strut mounts as they are prone to cracking and breaking, Other than that it could be a leaking shock ?

Yep that's it!!! Exact sound and circumstance!!

Had Skoda do a thorough check 3 times, had the Front suspension taken apart and all worn parts replaced.. Still does it!

Thanks for the replies.

Went out in the car on Wednesday when it was quite warm, certainly above 12degC.

Lots of squeaking for about 2 miles then nothing after a run along the dual carriageway.  On the return trip, also quiet.

If it was a strut top, wouldn't it be all the time? Maybe not for a shock as this might warm up with deflection and quieten itself?

I could understand it doing it and going off when it's wet but this is a headscratcher.

I guess I'll squirt a few things one at a time to see what works.

Yeah, I went out to the mo-in-laws to drop off her shopping, it was about 20 degrees... Over some bumpy roads, then onto the dual carriageway... and not one squeak!

These things are sent to task us!!!
