Compression test

Featured Replies

Hello forum! I've just reached 240k km on the clock. I've done the 60k km service (including belts). So far so good. The only thing that shows engine is so old is the oil consumption. But it doesn't drink oil at a constant rate. Sometimes it uses 150-200ml every 2000 km (quite fair), sometimes it uses a lot more. No smoke at all from the exhaust. And the car pulls excellent! Anyway, since I have a compress tester, should I take a measure? If so, any special precautions should be taken for the particular engine (aub)?

?

Would you not be best to just keep running your reliable car?

Leave as is unless you intend doing any engine work and spending money unnecessarily?

I don't think a compression test would be any harmful. On the other hand, it could give me some input on how the engine goes. 240k km are quite a lot, for a vag engine. Plus the oil drinking. If it, for example showed a low compression, I should do my homework to see if I would get a repair. In other words, it is for peace of mind.

It won't be a compression issue, it will be the valve stem oil seals. Just put up with it.

Ofcourse, all above are thoughts and just thoughts. If you think it could be dangerous for some reason, I won't do it!

@sepulchraveif it is proven to be the seals, it is an easy and quite cheap fix since only the cylinder head has to be removed. But if it is the oil rings and the compression test is ok, I won't touch it. Now, if the test is low then I will see if I will do a rebuild (I'll see what the advice of my mechanic will be - he is a cousin so cheap labour!)

Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts...

I love that little car!!! 😍
