Ghetto Heat Shield Repair

Thought I’d share this easy fix for the common problem of the heat shield clips pulling through the shield letting it fall onto the exhaust or vibrate against the body causing loads of noise.

First I made myself some 50mm discs from suitable sheet metal. Usually I would go and scrounge some offcuts of 0.8mm aluminium from my mates engineering shop but seeing as we’re locked down at the moment I used the base of a coffee tin. I can replace this again when I can get some aluminium. I punched a 6mm hole in the centre of the disc for the stud on the body to go through.

I ordered some of the clips off ebay because the original ones are all pretty rotten now. These cost pennies.

The original clip and plastic locator had pulled right through the shield.

I ended up ruining the old clip getting it off.

I just put the 50mm disc onto the stud and over the hole in the shield and secured it all up with the new clip and plastic locator.

You can see the copperslip grease I blobbed underneath oozing out.

The heat shield came loose at the front shortly after I bought the car in 2014. I repaired it in this way and the repair still holds.

I replaced the rear two today which were dragged off during the flooding we had earlier in the year. Only one left on the shield that hasn’t been repaired now.
