Fitting 9J wheels in rear

Featured Replies

Hello guys, as a title says I would like to fit new set of wheels on my estate octy, more specifically 225/40/R18 on 8J rim in front and 245/40/R18 on 9J rim in rear. Is it gonna fit or it will be wider than actual car? Has any body done it?

Edit: I forgot to mention that ET is 30

Is there a reason you want to put wider wheels and tyres on the rear?

It would greatly benefit a rwd car, but I cant see the benefit a fwd car would get on the road.

Stance, yo!

@tunedude No, it's just a set of wheels that I could have for a good price, unfortunately it's a set that has 8J at the front and 9J at the rear.  I really like design of that wheels so I'm just curious if I can fit them to my car.

As the original Skoda wheels are ET51 and 18 x 7.5J, those will be fine with an ET of 30.

But...245/40/18 is too big, it'll look like a tractor! Rears will need to be 245/30/18 or 235/35/18 to match the front circumference.

If you go for it post up pics so we can see how it looks.

For the techies, how would this affect the abs/TC/tpms?

Edit: the different tyre size front to back I mean.

@MarkyG82 I changed my mind after little bit of calculation, so I ended up ordering Xtreme's.

I'm not a techie, but as long as you reset the TPMS after fitting it wouldn't affect it. Same goes for using a space saver spare wheel, for example.

There would be no effect on ABS or TC as far as I can see.

@pist0nbr0ke are space savers not the same (or similar) outside diameter to stock wheels? The 245/40 is much taller than the standard 225/40. But it depends if the abs and related systems work on front/rear difference or just across the individual axle.

ABS based TPMS system don't just use rotational speed, they do more in-depth analysis of the signals from the ABS sensors that will detect if a space saver is fitted even if the rotational speed is identical.

Sounds implausible, but from personal experience from when I had to fit my space saver when I was getting an alloy repaired (after the supplying dealer simply painted the wheel, paint which came off the first time I washed the car).

As @PetrolDave says, I have put a 225/40/18 wheel and tyre on a car with 235/40/19's on the other 3 (in an emergency), reset the TPMS and had no issue.

When the TPMS is reset, it doesn't 'freeze' the existing values there and then, it starts a 'relearning' process which tells the system a new set of values, which are calculated after travelling a certain distance. It will then monitor the continuous rotation speed of the wheel using the ABS sensors and warn if this rotation speed changes outside given parameters, e.g. when a tyre deflates.

This is at least true for TPMS systems without sensors on the wheel itself (indirect, I believe it's called). Direct systems will simply monitor individual tyre pressures.
