Scrap it and loook for a new car?

Featured Replies

Ok, ive had quite few issues with my 2004 fabia now, but a bit annoyed as quite a bit invested last few years. But now I am facing:

- Gearbox is knows to be on its way out, but still drives fine. (vibration and noise at 4K, traced to the actual box)

-  Bad coolant leak, caused by a bad waterpump. And according to garagetiming belt doesnt look good. (They are both just 50K / 3 years old, replaces at official dealer)
- various small fixes for APK (Our version of MOT)

- The coilpacks are failing , had 3 failed since autumn last year. The last failure was a new one, all plugs are new.

The car has  value of a little over 1000 Euros. And the belt/waterpump alone gonna cost 500. And a future used gearbox change at around 1000 euros.

Is it time to give up?

I'd say that depends how much of the work you can do yourself, and what you would be able to replace it with if you got rid.

My general rule with buying a car is to spent half your budget, and keep the other half for putting it right. So if you're going to buy another car for 1000 Euro and put another 1000 aside for contingencies on it - would you be in a better car than if you spent 2000 Euro on the car you have?

Hmm, those are good questions. Thanks

I do have another car (self build camper) , and these days i work mostly from home. Changing the pump/timing belt and the gearbox I wont be able to do myself. I'm reasonably DYI handy, but no car mechanic.

If i scrap it i will get 500-1000 for it, and i will then wait until after the corona times too look for a replacement.

My other car is a Ducato L2H2 van.
