Thoughts on Skoda's extended warranty

Featured Replies

Extended warranties - never bought one because I've only ever kept one car longer than 3yr, my first Golf. Three months out of warranty a warning light comes on, turns out it would have cost well over £1000 to fix if i were not a known ABS fault with VAG cars. So despite being out of warranty, VW paid for the repair in full. I sold the car a few months later.

My Octavia will be 3yr in July and having looked around at potential replacements, to be perfectly honest I haven't found anything that would better suit my purpose than my current 1.4tsi estate. So now considering hanging on to it.

Received a reminder from Skoda today that warranty will expire and linked me to a quote for an extended warranty. All component cover with zero excess will cost £182.88 for 1yr.   Eh?  I ran the quote again just to double check that was correct and it was. Seems very good vlue to me. So why then when you buy the car new, they want £255 for a 4th year warranty?

I just checked Warranty Direct. They give you a basic warranty then you have to add on things such as audi0 cover and emissions and this and that. For the full cover with zero excess, they wanted almost £400  😲

I'm not going to go thru the poliy with a fine tooth comb until I know for definite I'm keeping the car, but what are peoples thoughts on Skoda's extended warranty? Any one tried claiming on it and been refused?

You need to read through all the terms & conditions.

The extended warranty is NOT the same as the warranty you got with your vehicle - your car came with the 3yr warranty that more or less covers anything and everything. At the time of purchase the 4th and 5th year warranty options are available and these are full extensions of the standard 3yr one.

The one you purchase after the expiration of your standard warranty isn't as good and won't cover absolutely everything.

Read through the policy and then make your decision.

I was in exactly same position as you, with my Octavia going out of warranty and considering buying an extended warranty. One year warranty worked out a lot of money, can’t remember what, but not insignificant. Decided to risk it and budget accordingly to allow for any eventualities.

Have to say, with exception of a fuel pressure replaced in February, car has been fault-free.

Looks like good value to me.

Took it up on mine for the last two years (yr 4 +5), thought it was good value (compared with the cost of a major issue). As above, it doesn't cover everything (e.g. don't think the infotainment is covered?). Second year was less than the first.

Haven't had to claim.

Come to think of it, absolutely nothing has gone wrong in 5 years now..  🙂

I took out the extended warranty and it seemed good value - I think the engine size makes a big difference to the quote. Can't comment on what it's like to claim as my 2014 Superb has never gone wrong

Thanks for the responses so far. All very interesting. My car is running smoth as silk, the only 'warranty' related issue ( if you can call it that ) being the usual problem of VAG milky hub caps. My default position is to ignore warranty but at £182 it may be worth a punt.

I did read the T&C as Stoofa recommended. Lots of things excluded that are wear and tear so wouldn't expect them to be covered in any case and even with the 5 and 7 year warranties offered by companies such as KIA, if you read those T&C you'll find the warranty changes as the car gets older. One thing that does worry me tho, it says that if an item fails which is warranty covered but it damages other parts of the car then those parts are not covered.  I'm not sure if that's still the case with a brand new warranty but sounds crazy.

Robs12 - infotainment? that's what I was askng myself because going back to that 7 year Kia warranty as an example, I do not believe items such as infotainment are covered for the full 7yr. Well I've read all the inclusions and exclusions on the Skoda extended warranty and unless I missed it, there is no mention whatsoever of infotainment. If that's the case then as the warranty basically says everything is covered except for blah, blah, blah, I'm reading it as the infotainment is covered. It's defo something I'd want clarified rather than assumed.

What bugs me tho is going to a 3rd party such as warranty direct and paying say £400 for their all singing all dancing cover, again you'd assume it'll be better. Better only until it's time to claim and the agent replies "computer says no".

EDIT:  And one other positive thing I noticed, there was no mention of how many times you could make a claim which is another trick the insurance sector hide away in the small print.

Just checked taking out for my car, £840.48! Think I'll give that one a miss.

How did you arrive at a price like that 😲   Skoda email mentioned reduced price if I take warranty out before the 3yr manufacturer warranty finishes but that sounds like pressure sales pitch which I'd take that with a pinch of salt. Might be a 5-10% discount at most but...  £840.48 ?

I entered my car as having 13k currently on the clock, it's a 1.4 and I selected 'All Component Cover' with an annual mileage of 10k and zero excess. price = £182.88  ( or £162.70 with a £100 excess ).

that was for zero excess, all components and mileage over 15k. You are right in that there is a discount if you are in warranty and its about to expire. My car has 52k but is 18 months out of warranty. They probably factor that in the quote. Not worth it for my car.

That must be getting on for 10% of the cars trade value. I totally agree, not worth it.

I took all component cover with £100 XS, 10K mileage. 1.4TSI DSG estate. 1st year was £250. 2nd year £155. I thought that was good value.

Ref infotainment - Not covered (from the policy wording):

"Traffic management system, telephone including Bluetooth, TV/
DVD, satellite navigation system and associated equipment of all
types.
We will not pay for fixed or portable in car entertainment systems
including, but not limited to, audio or video equipment, games
consoles, CD multi-changers, MP3 or
iPod equipment, speakers, amplifiers, remote controls."

EDITED to add - just checked and for policies taken out after 15th Jan 2020, that wording has been removed, so @scot5, yes, looks like it is covered now. That's good (depending on how much the quote is this year.... ;-))

I went for the Boundless CSMA £20 per month cover.  No limit on value of claim which is key as such items as DSG and turbo can easily cost over £2k.

Think I cannot get such a good deal when car over 5 years old so will only keep the Octy for another couple of years before trading in for an EV.

The Skoda cover is capped at the market value of the car (for all component cover).

I'll be interested to see what this year's quote is (year 6...).

I would snatch their arm off at that price for year 4.

Both of my most recent Skoda products have had turbo replacements inside guarantee after turbo actuator replacements didn't work.

The actuator bill alone is £483. I don't know the cost of the full turbo change, but I certainly don't want to pay it, if it happens again.
