Priming fresh engine

Featured Replies

Ive just had a fresh engine rebuild complete tear down and build back up with everything new. Im going to start the car in the morning for the first time? I will take the injector loom off and crank it to build the oil pressure. Ive been told to crank it 10-15 times but ive seen somewhere that you should just crank it 1 time then start it as its the quickest way to get full oil pressure. Any edvice anyone thanks?

Just start it, if assembly lube was correctly used then the bearing shells and bushes will be protected anyway.

After major engine work I used to always crank an engine for a while without allowing it to start until some oil pressure had built up. I also used to prime/fill oil pump and oil filter where possible and always lubricate everything during the rebuild(big end, mains, bores, cam bearings etc). Back in the day it was just by unplugging the coil!

Yeh thats what i thought everything has been lubed up so they should be fine to just start. Get oil pressure up streight away just starting it

Thats basically what the guy who built the engine said, thanks mate might play it safe and crank it a while

Cranking it builds pressure too slowly, it's an old wives tale, you want full pressure ASAP, just start it FFS.

Have you never watched "How it's made" type programs on the telly? Manufacturers build the engine, strap it to a dyno then give it death to make sure it's built right, they don't **** about with it first.
