vRS SE Cooling Fans Replacement

Featured Replies

Both my cooling fans have stopped working on low speed.  I first noticed the problem when the air con wasn't working when stationary.  I want to replace both fans and then repair the 2 originals at some point.  I have read here that it is normally the resistor that fails and seen the repair for them.  Does anybody know if the fans can be removed and replaced without removing the radiator and condenser and how to go about it?  The other issue is I have found a supplier for fans but there are various different sizes https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/skoda/fabia-6y2/17456/10437/radiator-fan

Did all vRSs have the same fans?  The engine is a BLT.  I have tried my best to measure the fans. Measuring the diameter accurately is impossible with the fans in place.  I managed to measure the circumference of the fans by winding string around them and calculating the diameter from that. The nearside fan has a circumference of 1,090mm so that is a diameter of 347mm and it has 7 blades.  The offside fan has a diameter of 910mm which is a diameter of 290mm and it has 9 blades.

Thanks for any advice.

Your measurement skills are impressive. The nominal diameters are 345 and 290mm.

Scroll about halfway down the parts listings here, to where it says ASZ/BLT in the 'data model' column. Part numbers are shown as items 2, and 3 in that subsection:

I've not tried removing the fans on a diesel Fabia, but I'd think it's doable without major disassembly.  From below with the front of the car well off the deck, remove undertray, then the two 'tripods' which mount the fans to the shroud, unplug electrics and drop out the bottom.  Be wary of rounding out the heads of rusted Tx30 screws holding the tripods.

On our twin-fanned petrol cars, the arrangement isn't quite like on this diagram (items 9, 10, the tripods), the second smaller tripod doesn't exist, and the whole shroud has to be removed to get the smaller fan out.  Not that much harder to do, but it does make it more of a struggle.  Let us know what you find.

Thanks a lot for your reply and information.  I'm hoping to get it done in the next couple of weeks.  I can get the fans ordered now.

Got the fans off today.  Snapped a few screws holding the fans on to the plastic shroud.  How do metal screws manage to seize in to plastic?  You wouldn't think it would happen.  Need to some how drill them out.  Shroud is now removed as well.  Unfortunately though, we discovered that the radiator is on its way out.  No point doing half a job so until I can get the radiator sorted the fans new fans aren't getting fitted.  Took the bumper off to get the radiator out and both headlights.

Anybody know of anywhere that can supply radiators quickly at a reasonable price?  Preferably mail order.  I'm in East Yorkshire.

Rust takes up more volume than the parent metal, so a steel screw that rusts within plastic will get progressively tighter.

What's the problem with the rad?

It's leaking from both bottom corners.  My coolant level has been going down but not too quickly.  This isn't the original radiator.  I had the original replaced in 2012 which it failed quite badly.  I had to carry a 2L lemonade bottle full of water with me until I got it replaced.

CarParts4Less radiator is currently £23.96 with free delivery using their 17% off discount code, don't think you will find it much cheaper than that!
