How to lock passenger door

Featured Replies

Good afternoon, this is my first post after lurking for a few weeks so any help you can give would be welcome.

Is there anyway to lock the front passenger door so it can not be opened from outside whilst letting the rest of the doors on the vehicle to open normally? The reason i ask this is i am a taxi driver soon returning to work. i have installed a safety screen to try and stop covig 19  getting into the front of the vehicle but pointless if a customer then opens the front passenger door to get in. so i need to lock the front passenger door whilst allowing the rear doors and the drivers door to be opened as normal. any idea how i can do this?

Thanks in advance

Andy

just put a big cardboard box on the seat, if it can be seen through the window no one will attempt to get in.

The most straightforward option I think is to unhook the external pull handle from the lock mechanism.

What about covering up the outside passenger door handle?

Nothing to open then.

I would have thought that anything done to prevent any of the doors being opened from the outside would make the MOT invalid - something like the box on the front seat sounds like the best idea.

Make the MOT invalid, thats a novel and creative concept.

Dear Sir, we are writing to advise you that the DVSA test certificate we gave you saying your car met the requirements on that day only is now invalid, they could send them out automatically the day after the test.

My vote is for the idea of taping up the door handle, use a contrasting colour gaffer tape and it will be obvious what its about, in an emergency somebody could quickly remove it especially if you doubled over the end making a removal tab.

My comment about the MOT/DOT was for the case should the vehicle be involved  in an accident - Police and insurance would certainly be interested if passengers could not be extracted because of illegal modifications to door.

I think you need to be able to open the door from the inside.

If the car had central locking that locks the door when you start your journey the outside door handle would be locked anyway.

But you didn't say that, OK, lets pretend that you did.

What law would that be then that prohibits an owner from modifying his property and allows the Police or insurance to make a DVSA test certificate invalid? Bearing in mind that the certificate states that the vehicle met the requirements on the day that it was issued.

The fire service will do whatever they need to do to get in. If a collision is bad enough that extrication is needed, there's a good chance the door won't be easily opened anyway and they'll be going straight to the cutting gear.

Quite right, we used to have several “keys” for gaming access to vehicles, one was in the shape of a big axe! That was a good few years ago, I guess they are more sophisticated methods now. At least to defeat a piece of sticky tape.

Also seems that if you prevented a passenger getting in there would be no need to get them out.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Because its a taxi, we are not allowed to make any modifications to the vehicle. So ive just ended up putting a sign on the window asking people to sit in the rear of the car and stuck black tape in an x shape over the Handle. the door still opens and closes normally but its only there to try and discourage people getting in the front of the car until this crisis is done. even though i have done this, i have had several people try and get in the front still.
