2006 1.4 16v non - starter

Featured Replies

Apologies beforehand if this is a little long winded.

last week my 2006 1.4 16v Fabia broke down with a damaged auxiliary belt. The belt hadn’t snapped, it was more like shredded to half it’s normal width. My partner who was driving at the time said multiple lights came on the dash and it stalled / cut out. From what she can remember the battery light, engine check light, traction control and brake warning lights all lit up.
Anyway, after being recovered home and purchasing and fitting a new auxiliary belt, it now won’t start. The top cam belt cover has been removed and the engine turned over by hand to inspect the timing belt(s) and all seems fine. As in it’s intact and there’s no teeth missing. I’ve lined the timing marks up and locked the cams in place and everything seems to line up ok. It seems to turn over ok from the key, e.g. it not cranking uneven or fast to suggest any valve damage. What it does do though when you try and start it after initially turning the ignition on and hearing the fuel pump prime, is what sounds like a cough or backfire through the throttle body? It only does that initially then it’ll crank over and over until an oil pressure light comes on?

As a side note, after fitting the new auxiliary belt I plugged a code reader in and checked for error codes  The codes I retrieved are as follows:-

P1553 Altitude Sensor Signal / Intake Manifold Pressure: Implausible Ratio

01314 Engine Control Module (ECM) No Signal / Communication

The above codes were cleared before trying to start with the new auxiliary belt fitted and no new codes have appeared.

Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Have a good look around for any pipework thxt might have got lacerated by a disintegrating auxiliary belt? I'm thinking something like pipework from EVAP purge valve to intake manifold?

Ok update. Spent a few hours today on and off between other things and found a couple of pipes that were split and a non-return valve(?) laid on the undertray. The pipe and valve ran from the brake servo to the inlet manifold. I’ve temporarily repaired the pipe and refitted the valve, but to no avail, it’s still exactly the same.
My experience of  ‘modern’ vehicles is somewhat limited being from an era of carburettors, distributors and keep fit winding windows. Having said that, the fundamentals are surely the same.
Anyway, I have fuel to the fuel rail which is a box ticked. However I only get one initial spark at the plug when cranking over then nothing until you stop and try cranking over again, then as before, one quite healthy spark followed by nothing.

Schematics seem to be difficult to come by for the engine, but at the coil stick I have 2 x Ground, 1 x +12v, and 1 thin gauge wire which I assume is a pulse? that I don’t get any reading from. Again making assumptions, could this be a cam / crank position sensor fault? and if it is, shouldn’t it throw a fault code?

Disconnect the battery negative terminal for ten minutes. Reconnect then try again.

The massive air leak from the servo vacuum line being open may have thoroughly confused the engine ECU.

A reboot may help.

Thanks I’ll give that a go in the morning👍
