1.2 TSI Turbo Upgrade

Featured Replies

I’ve just bought a turbo off a mk3 Leon 1.4tsi, and I am putting it on my Stage 2 1.2TSI running 155bhp been looking around and it looks like it should get it to around 190+BHP.
Any one know if there’s any upgraded coolers I could buy.

@xensnow has been doing stuff along those lines. I have spoken to JBS and another, and both said that doing an intercooler upgrade isn't really necessary unless you're doing serious track stuff or trying to get the absolute max out of a particular setup.

The same radiator and intercooler setup is used in the 1.4TSI and that's capable of over well over 230bhp with hybrid turbos. You'll also get a fair bit more turbo lag with a front mount, it's a whole lot more space for the turbo to fill up and squeeze!

The standard intercooler is watercooled and built into the manifold, it's possible to remove and blank it off but i'm not sure what fits in terms of aftermarket front mount intercoolers.

For the turbo, i'd highly advise getting a new gasket set for it, i got one for about £25 from AutoDoc, Elring brand;

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/9970020

Before you fit it though, ensure it is one of the larger turbos! The 122/125ps ones use the same as the 1.2tsi, It's a lot of work to do by yourself, but it is doable (be prepared to spend a good few hours on it - and you'll ideally want access underneath the car).

Just don't do it out in the sun with no sunscreen, i finished looking like a reverse of micheal jackson from being covered in oil, and after a shower it was clear the sun had also got me! Still suffering from that sunburn a week later 😕

You'll need T30, T40, 6mm Hex, 10mm and 13mm sockets at least, and one wierd big one (the 3 that brace the turbo to the head - visible from on top) that's like torx but it's 12 point, idk the name for that, or the size.

I had the bit for it (luckily, it was literally a one off random bit i had) but unfortunately it got stuck in the subframe after i dropped it, and i couldn't find it after i knocked it out with a speed bump still annoyed at myself for that, just glad that was after i'd finished installing it.

To change the studs for the manifold, get yourself a pair of nuts that you can lock together, the standard nuts are copper and were just too soft to lock together properly, they would keep turning on the thread, got the new studs in eventually though, but it took far longer than i wished.

If you're lucky enough that all the nuts come off the old studs without bringing the studs out with them, you can *probably* get away without changing them as long as the threads all look nice and clean etc.

Nice one thanks a lot, JBS are the ones who remapped it for me I’ve messaged them for a price on getting the new turbo mapped in.

Just for the map!?!?

Yep, it's classed as Stage 3. Even if it's like mine with no other mods except for the turbo.

ADEdmundson quoted me £400, but they're fully booked for the next 2-3 weeks and need a £50 deposit.

Note, they used to be known as ADE Tuning, (it was a partnership, one of the partners bought out the brand and renamed it).

Jeez that’s steep, on terms of making sure it’s the Bigger turbo the part number I’ve bought is 04e145722g if that’s correct? thanks again!

Sorry for the slow reply, trying to research it a bit before replying!

I did a lot of research and made a new post with better information, that can be referred to in future

The turbo you have, should be larger (though in my opinion, it doesn't really look larger), but it does have a different type of wastegate actuator, which may or may not work.

What you could do, is unplug the stock turbo wastegate connector, and plug it in to that one, start the car, if the engine light stays on, then it's not compatible (at least without recoding).

If the light goes off, then try blipping the throttle, you should see the wastegate actuator move, if it doesn't and the engine light comes on, then it's also probably not compatible.

If it does move, then you should be ok (light might come on even if it does move, since the actual wastegate in your car won't be working).

Thanks a lot, I’ll let you know how I get on with that turbo and if it’s not compatible I’ll send it back and refer to your new post. Really appreciate the research you’ve put in. Thanks again.
