Volvo S40 T4 vs Octy VRS vs Vectra 2.5 GSi vs Saab 9-3 2.0T

Featured Replies

Looking at changing the Octy for something with similar performance but want to save a bit on insurance, all 3 cars are significantly cheaper to insure according to the quotes I have been given, but has anyone had any experience of any them? I think it will make for an interesting couple of test drives comparing to my Octy, am looking forward to seeing what they are like...

Avoid the Saab on being a tank with very high fuel consumption..... Nice enough, but it doesn't feel like a 210HP turbo petrol at all. :thumbdwn: I can't comment on the other two.

Gets poor reviews for handling, driver comfort gets good marks though, bit of a motorway cruiser then...

Done alot myself with the Vectra GSi's. I wouldnt buy one tbh, especially seeing the idiots that built em...lol.

Is that MSD you are talking about? Didn't Lotus do some work on the suspension? Thought I read that somewhere, to be honest dislike standard Vectras but lovd the touring car version in the late 90's and remember lusting after a Supertouring version when I was a spotty student 8 or 9 years ago...

Oh it cruised at ahem 120 ok. (kmh ;))

However around town and blatting around in general I didn't often see the trip read above 20mpg. Thats V8 economy in my opinion....

Yes, Lotus no, suspension is standard SRi spec. Supertouring is something quite different to the GSi. The 3.0 was another beast aswell, enjoyed them...not.

I take it you're talking about the old S40. Have driven a 1.6 one, obviously slow but also has one of the worst chassis I have ever driven. No pleasure to drive at all.

'99 S40 T4 is supposedly a bit of a boat in the wet, understeer the order of the day, never good, the Saab I am going to look at is a 2.0 Ecoturbo, not sure of the exact model but has a sports pack fitted, whether that is purely cosmetic I shall find out on Tuesday morning!

I loved my 2.0 SRi vectra and was seriously torn between changing it to the vRS or a GSI. In the end I got a vRS and havent looked back. Lots better fuel consumption, small increase in insurance, slightly smaller interior but bigger boot. Lots more power to weight, and more exclusive. Youll find the vectra noisier inside as well which may get tiresome on medium to long journeys. They do have stereo control on the steering wheel, but hardly any come with cruise control or reverse parking sensors. Some have sunroofs which I found lovely and I also liked the central arm rest too.

What was it like reliability-wise? That would be one concern with the GSI, did you have bother with your SRi?

Are we talking about a Sports Saloon or the old style hatch here  If its the SS then you must have experienced a lemon and a half !!!!!
