Car check up?

Featured Replies

My car's going in to a local VAG specialist on Wednesday for a once over, anything worth getting them to check for me? 2017 pre-facelift Octavia 1.4tsi DSG estate with 58k on the clock.

It's just had a new AGM battery fitted and they're going to code that in, I'm also going to ask for a price to do the timing belt and water pump and service the DSG box if they can.

Anything else anyone would recommend getting checked? Cheers. 👍

Aircon service, if it’s never had one, is what I’d get done.

Timing belts have been subject to much debate, but it doesn’t need doing until the car is 5 years old at the soonest. The water pump is on the opposite end of the head to the timing belt and has its own separate drive belt.

It will be interesting what your specialist’s view is of what needs doing. I think if you’re taking it in and trusting them, whatever they say goes.

Timing belt seems a bit early but miles is high for 3 year old so take advice on that perhaps.

Lots of debate on DSG oil changes. Presume 7 speed?  If 6 speed then every 40k.

Full diagnostic check. Battery removal will have left a load of gremlins in the dtc memory that will certainly be good to be cleared out.

Coding battery is tops 10mins with VCDS or diagnostic tool.

Discs and pads perhaps.

Brake fluid change due at three years from new then every two after that (recommended)

No debate on a DQ200 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG, there is no service schedule or guidelines for maintenance.

(if someone wanted to change either or both of the oils then that is up to them, but why would you at 3 years / 58,000 miles?)

@broona

What servicing has it had like the Air Filter checked or replaced at the last service, and have the spark plugs been replaced.

The Brake Fluid can get checked for H20 content, or just get replaced.

Have you cleaned or replaced the Pollen filter & that area, or was that done at 2 years.

Depending on how recent they have been done I'd be doing air filter, oil filter + oil, brake fluid, pollen filter, plugs (maybe just a check).

After all that you are in a position to start checking other stuff like shocks and brakes for wear. Saying that my 2.0 TDI and a mates vrs TDI are both on original brakes at 70k miles each.

Attached a pic of its last service, done about 5k ago.

Can't see anything in the history about having the plugs or air filter changed, but it has had the brake fluid done.

I've put a new pollen filter in as the old one was minging, never thought about an air con service, I'll ask them.

Gearbox I wasn't sure about, more just curious as to whether it was worth doing yet, same thing with the timing belt. 👍

Thanks for the replies.

Had brake fluid but no air filter? That's odd. Unless the filter was done previously.

Specialist?   Lets just say if you ask then to check air filters and fluids and whatever else has been suggested above then hopefully the 'specialist' won't take offence. :D

Timing belt should be 5 years or  xxx miles whatever comes first. ( I say  xxx because there doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rule. It used to be every 4yr or 60,000 miles in the UK therefore logic says every 75k but when did logic apply to VW servicing?   Being a specialist they should know if it requires changing but 3yr / 58k sounds pretty soon to me. I think the safe rule of thumb is the belt should be at least checked for wear after 60,000 miles.

Couple of things don't make sense to me on that receipt.  MOT was done 27/11 but that's too early if it's a facelift model - didn't think they arrived in UK until late March, early April 2017? And brake fluid would have been done early too.  Pretty worrying the pollen filter was 'minging'.

You don't mention anything about previous service history? At almost 20k per year, I'm going to assume it's on the variable ( long-life ) service regime. That means it should have already had two services ( 1st around 20k miles, the other around 40k miles ). The pollen filter should be coming up for replacement at this service ( approx 60k ) but it's worrying that it's 'minging'.  That suggests to me it wasn't replaced at last service / perhaps has never been replaced.  Who last serviced the car?

If it's a facelift 2017 then I guess the warranty has just run out / just about to run out?  If it's the latter then it's always worth asking if they're aware of anything than might be a warranty claim.

I've attached the full history, it was a Motability car, and it's a pre-facelift, registered February 2017, so out of warranty unfortunately.

The garage is run by a couple of ex VW technicians with a very good reputation locally, I just really want it checked over for my peace of mind.

My apologies, I didn't read the original post correctly, read it as the face lift.

I'm assuming it being a mobility car means services were carried out as per manufacturer schedule. Still weird that MOT was carried out early tho. Is this when you bought the car? Perhaps that was done as routine when a 3yr old car ends it's lease.

Was it you who had the work carried out at Pullman?  If not I'd be concerned with the service as just  'Inspection' service carried out at Pulman. What's going thru my mind ( the state of the pollen filter is still bugging me :D ), is that being a mobility / lease that the garage may have skipped a few items.

As I said above, your specialists will know what they're doing but it maybe worthwhile mentioning to check the spark plugs. That's normally done at the 40,000mile mark or 2nd variable service. They're not due to be changed at 60,000 miles so your garage may overlook them - my thinking is if the pollen filter was minging then whoever carried out the 40k service may have skipped changing it, and if they skipped the filter then they may also have skipped the spark plugs. Does that make sense?

Dealerships are well recompensed for Servicing but Motability do them on Variable interval servicing now,

but if under 18,000 (20,000) when at end of lease it will get serviced at the time of the MOT.

Motabiliy cars are MOT'd usually at around 1 month before hand back and last year mine was done in mid September for a mid November hand back and had a Service as well.

The hand back pictures were used by BCA to sell the car and Arnold Clark bought it, it went to them direct from the dealership i handed it back to without going to the auction,  and it is still sitting advertised for sale but it was given another MOT in May.

No advisories on the May MOT like on the September one.

Everything on the service history was done before I got the car, I only bought it in March, I can only think that it was handed back in November/ December, hence the MOT, and not put up for sale until a couple of months later?

Makes perfect sense, I'll make sure the have a look at the plugs, and the oil too, I might ring Pulman and ask what was done at the last service.

Well you certainly will be giving this car a good start in your ownership by getting it checked over, absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just keep up with all the regular service components and it should be fine.  Car of that age and mileage it probably won't show anything concerning.

One last thing to add, you could check the age of the tyres on the sidewall yourself for peace of mind. My March 16 plate got a full set in March at 58k as two fronts needed doing, < 3 mm,  the rears had enough tread ~4-5mm but were well over five years old and outer edges were all cracking up. I'm really impressed with the Cross Climates I opted for, very sure footed indeed.

And it needs new front discs and pads, but they were happy enough with everything else, going to get it booked in over the next couple of weeks.

@broona  What crazy price are they charging for doing that for you?

They said somewhere round £150 all in for Pagid, an hours labour plus parts, sounded reasonable to me.

Really £150 all in for Discs and pads fitted and VAT.  Bargain.   (Not £150 per side...)

Skoda Main Dealer Fixed Price i think used to be £249 or maybe £299.

VW's fixed price which is £319 but that excludes Golf GTI, R & GTE's etc.

Yep, that's for both sides, discs and pads.

Mine's only a 1.4, so that looks to be £209 from Skoda, still a decent saving though, and at least 25 miles closer than my local dealership.

Sorry, that is a Listers price list and likely not current.

Thats certainly a fair price for discs and pads.

Looks like you found a good independent then. When I "enjoyed" crawling under cars on the drive, discs and pads was a hour with all the right tools once up on the stands.
