Manual gearbox "saw sound"

Featured Replies

Superb 2020 1.5TSI manual, 10kkm on the clock

Several times i have head a metallic "sawing" sound from my Superb and today i finally nailed it in front of the dealer. The sound appeared only in warm weather when everything is warm and on idle. It disappears when the clutch is depressed, but with a delay, so it seems something inside gearbox is gone. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I was told they have not heard anything like this before, in few weeks they should figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.

I'd be worried the clutch pressure plate is faulty and machining its way through the gearbox casing!

Don't think the 1.5 has a DMF

It sounds different than classic DMF failure. Sounds more like there is something with a really dull saw blade trying to hack its way out.

I logically would exclude the flywheel-clutch assembly as the sound does not stop immediately after depressing the clutch but with a delay. Since its out of gear the front diff assembly is stopped, so it cannot be causing it. This leaves either the main shaft of the gearbox or the output shaft, and i'd guess it the latter. So if its the output shaft then the sound could  come from simply dead bearing, or something has had to give and collapsed in there.

The car drives just fine, all the gears work and change just fine. If it weren't for that sound i would say all is ok.

Update from the dealer, the gearbox bearings are dead. What exactly i dont know, but according to Skoda they are non-serviceable bearings so i should be getting a new gearbox.

I was told there is no quick solution for now, so i should relax and just drive the loaner they gave me. After driving 1400km in the 1.0TSI Scala in last 3 days, i sure do miss my Superb...

Update to the monologue: According to the dealer they attempted a repair and it didn't work. So finally Skoda agreed to provide a new gearbox. For a 10kkm driven car that should have been a no brainer first step when they identified it. I was told the Manual gearboxes are not available as a separate item, so the factory has to do a special order for my car, current estimate is 13.08. Not sure if it's for the arrival of the gearbox or when they estimate the car to be complete.

So anyways I'm going to keep rocking around with the 1.0Tsi Scala for another 2 weeks at least. After driving more than 3500km with it, the lane assist has tried to kill me only 5 times and bicyclists 3 times, great fun indeed.

Dammit i want my Superb back...

I know it doesn’t help, but you can turn lane assist off in the radio settings menus usually.

Dead gearbox bearings would make me ask them to check the dmf etc is in good nick too before they stick it all back together.

About a week ago the new gearbox arrived and i got my car back. They didn't fully explain what went wrong in the original gearbox, only told me that the broken bearing was a non replacement item and the order for new gearboxes was the reason why it took so long to get the replacement.
