Paint blistering

Featured Replies

Hello,

My Superb is approaching 4 years old (89000 miles) and the amount I have a crazy amount of stone chips compared with other cars I've had with a lot more mileage but I have noticed on a few areas around the front bumper, roof and side panels that worryingly the paint is starting to blister. I don't think the lease company protected the car before delivery so will need to get it checked at the dealer before it goes back.

Just wondering if anyone else is getting similar issues with the paint?

Welcome. Just to put your mind at rest; except for the very expensive 3M clear plastic paint protection films, nothing will protect a car from stone chips. Even these will not stop the really high speed flying stones! I presume your car is on a PCP? If so, all lease end cars have a standard they have to meet before they attract charges however, most dealers don’t worry about these if you take another vehicle with them. The problem with your photo is there is nothing to gain a size perspective, so what size are these blisters? Is the blister you’re referring to the lighter colour circles?

Yeah they are 1p size and quite a few, i'll try and get a better picture. It's a company car so will get the fleet manager to give it a once over

Red has always been the worst colour paint to have, may look good but wears badly.

Just to add a little balance my Superb is the same color and will be 5 years old in October. The paint when washed still looks brand new. I have nothing like those blisters on mine.

When I used to frequent the Alfa Romeo site, people used to complain about red paint being "soft" and easily picking up stone chips. My corrida red car has its share of chips, mostly on the bonnet. The only protection is a bi-annual polish and wax. A bottle of touch up paint comes in very handy.

Does anyone know how much film is 5o protect the front of the car? Would it be worth the expense to keep the car as pristine as possible for say a 5/6 year ownership?

Ps. Apologies for the hijack.

It’s not really designed for large areas but no, it’s not that expensive. Something like this should do it.
