Noisy in the morning

Featured Replies

My 2 month old Tavia vRS is quite noisy in the morning. Is it the tappets?

Also , on very light throttle, it seems to hesitate a bit. I mean when you are just maintaining speed so you are only slightly pressing the pedal. Is it the fly by wire throttle being at the start of the dash-pots travel?

Thanks

Steve

I had a similar 'tappet sound' immediately after start up and when I stopped at traffic lights after it warmed up.

The engine, as I understand, is known to be noisey, which I have read several places.

The noise that I had after it had warmed up and when at idle was the charcoal cannister venting.....to the inlet???? not sure . But basically it's a solenoid activating in quick succession stopping pressure building in the tank, if I understood it all. It's mounted on the drivers wing towards the bulkhead, if it's making a noise, you'll find it.

Hope I understood and helped you diagnose your 'noise'. It was driving me nuts wondering what it was!!!!

All 1.8T's are prone to the "Deisel-like" noise on start-up, but it tends to disappear fairly quickly, mine quietens down nicely within a few seconds ;)

When you say 'In the morning' for how long do you mean? On first starting mine sounds like tin can full of nails but this lasts for 5 seconds maximum. Also mine will hesitate first thing in the right circumstances. My road is effectively a crescent, if I pull away from the house and drive around the crescent it will stutter slightly. If I do a three point turn in front of the house and go the other way it doesn't. I'm guessing that the extra manovering (sp?) gets everything flowing a bit better. Yes, 'technical' is my middle name.

Basically, it's done it since new, nothings broken, it goes like stink and I'm not bothered. :D

Good.

You get paranoid after owning an Impreza ;)

I take it this charcoal thinky sounds like a slight "knocking noise" that sort of disappears sometimes and other times sort of varies in the speed in which it makes the tappy noise?

On mine i can only hear it when stationary and radio turned down but it does sound very diesely ;).

Edited for spellign miscakes

Yeah, it is a variable ticking/rattle at idle.

Easiest way to find out if it is that is to pop the bonnet ant place a finger or hand on the top of the cannister and feel the solenoid actuating.

It took four months and a mechanic stood at the vehicle to diagnose it!!!!

You may also notice a "turbine" (not turbo...) whine plus "blowing exhaust" noises for a minute or two after a cold start.

This is the secondary air injection system (thanks to Dave - Skodaw - for the explanation). It is a fan which blows air into the exhaust stream so that (a) the catalyst can burn off the excess fuel from the over-rich cold start mixture, and (B) in doing so, the catalyst reaches operating temperature a bit faster.

It shuts off when things have warmed up a bit.
