How to adjust distance on self levelling LED lights

Featured Replies

My car got badly damaged last February while parked overnight by a hit and run driver. As part of the £5.5k repair the garage fitted a new O/S headlight. Last night was the first time I drove it in the dark and sadly found it quite dangerous. The new headlight was only throwing out light at a rough distance on dip, of around 15mtrs. With LED of course, once the set distance has been reached, light cuts straight down to darkness ahead.  Other light bulbs will still throw a bit more light ahead when set distance has been reached. So the road straight ahead is only lit for a short distance on dipped lights. On the dark country roads, if there was something or somebody ahead in the middle of the road, I would spot them probably too late to avoid. These are self levelling lights and this system does seem to be working, as they set themselves with the usual up and down movement as soon as you switch the lights on. Is there a simple way to adjust distance on the headlight, or do I have to take it all the way back to the garage that did the job this Monday morning? Maybe a Skoda Technician can answer this one.

You need diagnostics unfortunately. You initiate the basic settings on the lights which resets the position, you then manually adjust the lights, tell the car it's done and it saves the new position as the starting point.

Thanks Phil-E. You know with all the tech in modern cars nowadays, I had a feeling that would be the case. It's back to the garage then tomorrow.

I think you only need diagnostics to reset the 'basic settings' position of the automatic levelling adjustment.

They still have hex screws that will allow you to adjust the unit manually but you're best off doing this somewhere with the proper equipment, otherwise you risk adjusting this too far and blinding people.

Yes I did see some white plastic hex screws, one near the dip bulb and the other near the main beam one. Initially wondered if they were linked to adjustment, but I did not want to fiddle and get it wrong, as LED headlights can be very blinding to any oncoming driver.

Yes they are the screws that you use to adjust the lights. But it needs resetting in the light controller to re-learn the new adjustment as the base position.

Can this be done with OBD Eleven do you know ?

Cheers

I'm sorry I have zero knowledge of what OBDeleven can and can't do as I use VCDS.

Don't think it is a simple process. I took my car back to the garage to have it done and they informed me that they had erased the necessary software on their computer, ready to download some new updated software from VW, before the lights could be aligned.  There was a delay in getting this software from VW. Had to go back the next day when their VW download was complete and even then it took around an hour. Lights perfect now thank goodness.
