Rear camera - can I change to turn it on when I want?

Featured Replies

I do quite a bit of pacing cyclists on the rear bumper (on private roads) and it would be handy to turn on the rear camera when doing this to see better how from they are off the rear bumper. Does anybody know if their anyway (VCDS?) to enable this - ideally I could press a button to turn on the rear cam area for say 10 seconds when driving forwards. Does anybody else have such an odd ball request?

Someone more technically minded will probably give you a better answer!

However I would have thought that in theory if you moved the switch (micro switch that gear stick engages when selecting reverse) to outside of the gear selector and maybe changed it to an on/off switch then you could control when it's on??

Just my thoughts 😁😁

Id just buy a rear facing dash camera. I have one on my Nextbase and can see the rear view very clearly.

I have a rear view camera and I can activate the camera by pressing the P (arking ) button on the console in front of the gearstick.

I also have a Nextbase dashcam. If the rear fitted rear view camera is used, it interferes with the DAB signal and I am informed that there is no fix for this. If the front fitted rear view camera is fitted, it is useless if there are any passengers in the rear seats.

Good luck

That might work - though if that switch activated the rear parking sensors that’s not great

It’s a brand new car with factory camera and rear sensors but I don’t have a P button in front of the gear-lever but maybe I can get one retro fitted

The P button is to activate "Park Assist" so unlikely just adding the button will work IMHO.

On a car that does not have park assist, like mine, the P button activates the camera. However, the camera de-activates at speeds above 15 KPH

Interesting that you have that button yet don’t have park assist as I’ve just a line of blanks there

I have the P button too.  Have rear camera but no rear assist.  :)   Presumably it's something they've discontinued in more recent models.

I am a cyclist, but cyclists up my chuff when driving vehicles can be a PITA.

Rear cameras are good, but then so is a better windscreen washer pump, or the rear jet readjusted to fire back just a little.

There are two “P” buttons:

This one activates parking aids such as the camera or OPS sensors.

This one activates park assist where the car “parks itself”.
