xenon and continental driving

Featured Replies

i assume that you need to adjust the xenons on the fabia VRS for driving on the continent ? is there a lever or something which needs moving or is it done with vagcom like the height adjustment requires , i found no mention in the owners manual about xenon adjustment:confused:

And to echo this, what do you do with the non xenon lights when you go to pester the frogs?

Cheers

Headlamp protectors with beam deflectors stuck to em seems to be the easiest choice.

havent seen xenons in the flesh are they projector ones also?

is o most vag projectors have a lever to move the lense from left to right.

There is a lever in the Xenons - but frankly I prefer to use the continental converters for the non-Xenon version any day.

I've driven with those on every time I visit France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands and not a single time did I get flashed - I always drive with dipped beam on so it would have happened had I been blinding anyone even remotely.

If you buy the kit from the dealers they'll provide you with the full kit, which incorporates the headlight protector with 'blacked out' bits to make them continental converters, it has a couple of rubbery bits to go under the headlight unit and there is a metal clip to go over the top.

Later kits also have a protective strip that you can put underneath (on top of your bumper) to avoid damaging it during remove/fit.

I bought mine second-hand. One thing I did find was one of the metal clips worked loose sometimes. I applied a little rubber foam (the stuff you stick on door (frame)(s) ) to the top of it so the bonnet keeps it down.

I reckon it's done at least 5k of continental driving without a problem since

The official line is that you shouldn't do this on Xenons as they're projector lights and by definition unsuitable for this type of thing. In reality I reckon that is BS as the lights will adjust downward not upward. But I'm probably wrong :D

What I find amusing is the European Law that requires you to carry a spare set of bulbs. On a Xenon equipped car??? May I suggest that this law is out of date? Perhaps if manufacturers made these bulbs, either normal or Xenon, accessible and changeable then it would not be so ridiculous

The law is also applicable to brake, side & rear lights, so in that sense there is still a point really.

Not disagreeing with you mind, to change the bulbs on the front of the car is a painful exercise, and Hayley's Kia Picanto is even worse (hard to imagine)

I don't bother with the lamps - just lower them a bit, IF i'm feeling benevolent. After all the L/H drivers never bother when they come over 'ere.

Living on the coast, most cars that come off the ferry are still dipping to the wrong side, and nobody seems to care less.

With Xenons you can't just lower them a bit & you'll blind people a lot. You will definitely get pulled by the police in NL - they don't like it when your lights are badly adjusted, let alone for the wrong side of the road.

Fully agree with the sentiment of your post though ;)

Xenons can be adjusted to "point the other way". There's a lever under them. Dealers really don't want people messing with them though as the voltages are potentially lethal.

The continental headlight converters do not seem to work on Xenon equiped cars. When I tried them, if anything, it made matters worse!

For day trips or a long w/e, I'd try the headlamp protectors and blank them out with insulation tape etc. tail and error.

If I was going abroad for a moth, I'd consider getting the Xenons switched over.

Actually they work fine?

All the lever does is to cut the 'triangle' down to a flat line - it works & passes the MOT in NL (I went through a mate's when I was there). No problem :)
