Octavia Cruise control.

Featured Replies

Fitted cruise control to my Octavia at last so thought I'd share a few pointers (in no particular order) with anyone wishing to do it themselves.

1) The instructions from the Golf web sites are very good

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/cruise_control.htm

and

http://www.golfmk4.co.uk/cruise_control.htm

I was a bit worried about messing with wires in my car but once I'd started I realised just how easy it really is to do.

2) Dont bother buying the additional 1.8T loom. Simply extend the 4 wires from the VAG loom, through the connection block and along the bulkhead to the ECU. £17 seems a bit steep to me  Simply follow the wiring diagram from the web and work from that.

3) Removing the scuttle panel is a bit tricky and not very well explained in the above instructions. There is a plastic groove along the bottom of the screen that the scuttle panel clips in to. Lift the outer corner of the panel and and you'll see it clipped into this groove. I used a long thin screwdriver to lift it out of the groove and once it starts to come away its very easy.

3) You may need to extract the wiper linkage to gat access to the connection block cover (as per instructions). Its a right pain to extract! I gave up in the end so carefulyl drilled through the cover and ran my cable through there (Remember, I diddnt use the connection block/terminals)

4) If you're going to tap into the back of the fuse box as per the instructions, you'll find ther eis a screw holding the dash panels in place which, is hidded behind the headlight switch panel. Use a flat screw driver to pop the headlight switch panel out to expose the screw.

5) I tapped into fuse 5 as per the instructions, but afterwards I thought that was a waste of time as I think the black cable is just a 12v feed to the switch. Next time I'd find a more convenient place and add an in-line fuse.

6) The Golf site says there are 2 screws and 1 bolt holding the steering column covers on - on the Octavia there are 4 screws and 1 bolt.

It took me 4 hours but it would be about 2 next time as I know how to remove the scuttle panel and dash plastics. Big thanks to Ross for mentioning that bypassing the connection block/terminals was the easiest way to do it  and thanks to EddyH for selling me his spare CC loom at a bargian price 18 months ago :D

I did this about 9 months ago, but wired it into the connection box. Time to do everything but get to the fuse panel 2 hours. Time to figure out how to get the fuse panel out 2 hours

Mine was the reverse really, all the internal stuff went quickly, the scuttle panel and wiper mechanism were a right PITA though :(

I will say I've yet to activate it with VAG-COM so I dont know that it works for sure

Just got reminded of that when clearing out my PM box this morning. The loom I used was basically an extended loom as you've done. Make things much easier. IIRC I took the power feed from the clutch pedal rather than the fuse box.

Sadly I only realised it was just a power feed when I'd already taken it from the fuse box - Just about anywhere would have been an easier place to take it from

If fitting to a 4X4 you will need to make sure that the steering is centralised before removing the steering wheel (and other bits?) so that you do not upset the zero position calibration for the ESP steering angle sensor.

Good point, though this is covered in the fitting guides and you can re-calibrate it with VAG-COM afterwards afterwards.

I guess you may need to do so on a WRC too because IIRC they also have ESP

Well it works  If anyone wants cruise fitting in the midlands drop me a PM !
