Those with a Resonated Scorpion System...

Recommended Posts

...are you finding much resonance in the cabin?  I've just had mine fitted today and whilst it sounds much better without being offensive, i am finding that i'm getting some (good lol) vibrations through the seat, nothing that would scream to you 'i can't live with this' but would be nice to try and reduce it.  I had it fitted by my local VAG specialist who took his time over the fitting and did his best to make sure nothing was touching the chassis or the tailpipes - I'm wondering if it will settle down a bit...?

I was looking at adding some additional sound deadening to the boot and rear seat anyway so that may help in time.

There is a bit of resonance at certain frequencies, yes - although nowhere near as much as the non-res.'d system! 😅 (which I initially went for and then very quickly changed to res'd).

Myself and (crucially) my other half don't find it too much of an issue, although it can be worse based on empty boot (defs worse on an estate than a hatch) and with seats down. Would have thought in an estate, adding some soundproofing in the boot / rear seats would significantly improve it as you say.

AFAIK there's not much you can do re: connection to chassis to deaden the sound, but think it would be minimal benefits anyway.

Either way, definitely better than the non-resonated system 😜

I find it ok, although the wife hasn't been in it yet lol.  And at 70-75 with the cruise on it was not droning - overall im happy - good to know others have similar experience, i'll start a bit of work on just helping to reduce the frequencies into the cabin a bit more i think next.

I can't imagine the non-res systems - i must be getting to old for those!

I blame 'being in my mid-20s', 3.5 years ago, for that initial lapse in judgement 😬

Got the videos kicking about somewhere to remind myself of what a silly idea it was... had 3 months of it, with a few drives up to Birmingham & back for work where I was noticeably talking louder for the first hour as I was basically deafened 😉

One of the pitfalls of some aftermarket exhausts. However once it has been driven a while and sooted up on the inside, the harshness usually goes away.

The last performance exhaust I had was made by BCS and that neither vibrated or droned. Not sure how they managed it but it was a piece of art to look at.

Heard good things about BCS - although i believe the system for the Octavia is turbo back only, then you need Stage 2 i believe, which im not interested in going to anyway - we also have an Up! GTI in the household and a few on the Up! forum have had the BCS fitted with its drone eliminator system and they report its superb, even at 70 in a little car.

Fitted mine last week, took a while getting it all lined up. Initially I didn't like it as it felt overly loud and was picking up a bit of resonance in the cabin (this surprised me as my other car is a modified Impreza with a Sports cat and single silencer and it felt louder than that). Within a couple of days it settled down quite a bit and is a lot quieter (less boomy) now.

Has anyone fitted an additional rubber hanger to the spare one that is on the Scorpion system and on the car (mid-section), I know its not used on the factory system but my OCD wants to put one on, on mine the gap between hangers is approximately 100mm so quite a long rubber hanger would be required...

If the system is hanging fine and doesn't sway about, I genuinely would not bother.

Good to know that it settles a bit - I am going to add some Dodo Sound deadening in the boot and under the rear seat and footwells this weekend too - just to help it a little more, because the exhaust sounds great!

Hi guys!

My first post to this forum!  :)

I have this system fitted to my 230 fl estate and I'm having some problems with annoying boomy and bassy drone and resonances in low rpm (maybe 1500-3000rpm). It gets really bad when the exhaust gets properly hot on a long trip. You can hear it basically all the time, even on flat road but on a uphill or acceleration... :@.

On the outside the sound is very nice, but I was very surprised with the cabin noise. I'm still hoping that it's just because something is not right and I can get rid of it.

I have already added sound deadening to boot floor, sides (not wheel arches), boot lid and under the rear seats. Piping should not be touching anywhere (going to check this third time when I have chance to lift the car). If I remember, the y-section looked like it's a bit close to the heat shield on the spare wheel well, maybe it expands too close to it when hot. I even tried wrapping the exhaust to the fake tips to get the sound away from under the car (this made a minor difference). Saw the trick in some Kia Stinger forum as they have fake tips too.

And for the hanger, I got a hanger from my old Saab 9-3 lying around so it found itself a new home.

Do you guys have any tips or tricks to share?

Presumably, yours is resonated? (Otherwise you'd be used to the excessive booming of the unsilenced system 😉)

There seems to be a lot of factors as to how boomy or resonating the Scorpions feel. You seem to have addressed one of the most common issues which is with it developing some sort of turbulence between the 'real' exhaust ends and the fake tips. If there's too much of a gap, it tends to cause vibrations (and that's about as much 'science' as I understand 🤔).

I mainly notice booming with my rear seats down, but I've not added any additional sound deadening in the car yet. Normally it's in the mid-range too, under load. With seats up it tends to be ok, although yes - on long motorway drives / with a hot exhaust, it does get pretty loud.

You might investigate the Y-section again and proximity to heat shields. I asked my tuning garage to ensure all the heat shields and undertrays were tightened appropriately as a direct request last time it was on the hoist; seemed to fix a few minor (unrelated) rattling issues

Yes, resonated system.

Deadening helped a bit for me. Before I did that, it almost sounded like you're inside a booming metal barrel or something.  And the road noise is quieter now of course.

Yeah, i'll definitely check that when i get access to the lift.

Funny enough, some days this boom seems to be quieter. Maybe it's just that the pipe positioning is different and temperature differences etc.
