Why all the modifications?

Featured Replies

My choice of a VRS was economical. I wanted the performance of my old cupra with the economy of a TDi (and the moon on a stick :)).

I could have had the PD160 ibiza Cupra standard, or for the same money (well, a bit more now...) have a fully loaded VRS with some interesting mods which handled and performed better. (the cupra would never have survived in standard form).

I am a tinkerer, whether it be PC, Car, in the garden, the fishtank, even at work! - you name it, i've modified it; I can always see improvements.

The FVRS is a great car standard - but has SO MUCH POTENTIAL! I'm on the waiting list with JBS for big turbo concversion now, and mines only 4 months old and done 7000 miles :) :)

Just to see the look on a BMW drivers face when you pull away from them in a little skoda hatch makes it worth it alone.

You got a link/details on the BIG turbo conversion? Is it not gonna change the driving, introducing more lag??

Big turbo does change the driving - gives you more power. :D I've not noticed any real lag with mine, but then perhaps I've never driven a pd130 without a big turbo so am not used to it being any different. The turbo tends not to be the source of lag, it tends to be big FMICs which have a much larger volume than the standard SMIC, and also has wider pipework. Again I have a decent FMIC and 50mm pipework throughout my turbo system, and noticed no real lag.

Still waiting for the full info after speaking to James last month. The conversion looks like being a hybrid from what was said, but he couldn't comment on output or costs at that point. I expect with will be fairly similar to jabbas seeing as the standard injectors limit output to about 220 bhp.

Give JBS a ring and get your name put on the 'interested' list.

If it is a hybrid it shouldn't add lag, its not a bigger turbo. May even spool up quicker with a good exhaust.

Deleted - duplicate post.

I think you get no lag because you have a hybrid turbo, rather than a big turbo. A big turbo requires more exhaust gases to spin it up, which means it kicks in further up the rev-range, but does result in big (but not really as useable) bhp :D

Chris

ah right Chris - assumed with my turbo being from a V6 tdi it might be a bit bigger. I do get quite good spool up with having essentially no exhaust at all. :o

Well, I'm happy with it anyway, and there's further upgrades to be had with it too, should I wish. :)

Thats not funny:mad: the vRS to taxi ratio up here is about 1 vRS to every 5000 tdi's

Tdi's? In Stirling 90% of the Octy taxis are sdi's :D And about 90% of the taxis in Stirling are white Octys :):)

No vRS taxis :mad::mad:

Hey, there's nothing wrong with SDIs :haha:

What's funny about that?

I have an SDI, and I find that mine is reasonably brisk yet still economical. As per my sig, it is adequate for my level of driving talent :D

The way our local taxi drivers drive their sdi's they are all obviously vRS wannabies:):)

I'm assuming that they all have a standard sdi lump under the bonnet :P:P

I aspire to an RS, but found that my old 1.4 16v was quicker than most RSs, so when it came to time to change I went for the SDI on the assumption that it would be quicker than most TDIs.

I've not been disappointed :D

Not Stricktly true. I'm havinga turbo conversion as we speak. Was told that there lazier than the standard turbo, and come in about 300 RPM's later. There is a slight lag, but the behoaviour of the Furby changes to behave more like a petrol. Oh yeah, and SHed loads of torque

So you're agreeing with me :P Basically, you are sacrificing 300rpm of rev range and as a result will have to keep the revs up to use the power from the turbo? ;) Did they say which petrol car it was going to behave like?

All the airport taxis are white, the taxi centre in West End is stil putting 06 plate sdi's (I stand corrected:D ) all of which are silver a bit like vRS's are all black in Scotland

ps there is even a few yellow taxis kicking about!!

That's what i would've thought. But 300rpm is not that much, even with the limited range. The turbo conversion guys will have to post some details when it's done. Prices, driveability, power etc.
