Oiling tyre sidwalls

Featured Replies

I have just fitted new set of tyres before having service and MoT at main dealers a few days later. When I got the car from main dealer, all road wheels had substantial coating of sticky oil on side walls. Not seen this before. Any ideas why?

The tyre dressing the dealer valeters use is either sprayed on which can be messy causing overspill on the alloy wheels or they use a brush dipped in a tin/container and literally brushed on like a painter. It is the latter type which tends to be oily in nature.

Surely it is what the Tyre Fitter brushed on the new tyres to fit them onto the rims. Soap Paste.

?

Why would anyone put Tyre Dressing on new tyres?

If it is 'tyre dressing' as applied by 'Kerb side motors' type places to Joey up a car then they are muppets IMO.

Is it the white stuff near the bead of the tyre or is it black and greasy all on the sidewall. If its the latter its just the tire shine dealers use. If its the former then its just the stuff tire shops use to help get the tire on the rim, will come off in one or two washes.

...Having read you had the tyres fitted PRIOR to going for the MOT and service, I would think the dealer dressed the tyres as part of the service. This may have been done as part of a valet, which is supposedly included as a service at many dealers. (Possible).

I am sure you would have noticed the stuff on the tyres already, had you had them fitted before the service, etc. (Probably).

The other simple reason may be due to the current Covid19 climate. The service station may just have used some sort of "Sheep-dip type cleaner to drive through, in order to sanitise the wheels/tyres, prior to them working on it. This is quite a likely scenario, too!

we've all used tyre shine at some point im sure!!!

Definitely not applied by tyre fitter, intentionally or otherwise. I retorqued all the road wheel nut when I got home from tyre fitter and could not have missed it. The stuff is oily, has not dried out after 24 plus hours.

No mention on service paperwork about it being part of the service, although it was obviously done by main dealer while he had the car for service.

An addtional Covid treatment seems most likely to me but why would the  dealer not advertise so?

Unfortunately, I cant contact the dealer, not surprising as he is a main dealer.

I might contact the tyre fitter tomorrow.

Not sure on the sheep dip scenario, I know someone who had to get warranty work done on their car and they didnt do any sort of cleaning or anything before or after fixing the car. There were even oily prints around the front of the car from someone working on it! Granted some dealers may be taking it more seriously but thats just my 2 cents.

...Or perhaps, just get some soapy water and clean it off, if its bothering you!

I spoke to the tyre fitter who seemed surprised that the main dealer would apply tyre shine as part of the service.

I have had not success in trying to speak to dealer service department so I spent some time this morning cleaning the gunge off. Would rather had not had it in the first place.

Thanks all,

Ian

Horrible stuff.

I've always just given the tyres a good wash and scrub while cleaning the wheels and that keeps them looking good.
