Android Auto/CarPlay Retrofit? MY15

Featured Replies

Hiya,

Looking at the forum there's chatter about retrofitting newer radios into older cars, from what I understand the screen and buttons are just that, everything goes to a unit in the glovebox which has the brains. How would I fit something like the MIB 2.5 with the bigger screen? Would something like the eBay link below fit? Does it have to be Skoda branded? Once it's installed do I need VCDS to code it to keep my parking sensors?

This is my current head unit, I can't find any way to use CarPlay and the UI looks fairly dated.

That is Amundsen Plus from the older Rapid. (VW RNS315)

The newer factory units from 2015 onwards are NOT compatible with your car.

Most go for a Chinese Android big screen one when upgrading.

Ahh lame, any way to retrofit them? Had a look in the glovebox and there wasn't one of the units I've seen in other cars either. 😕

The link on ebay is just to a screen. All the electronics in the newer VW Head Units are in the Rapids glove box

An OEM alternative with a bigger screen that does go in your car is the Columbus (RNS 510) but that is too old for Android Auto etc as far as I know.

Expert on fitting them here (and sometimes has used ones for sale) is @Rustynuts

That looks like a better option! Saves having to look into retrofitting the newer glove box, radio electronics and screen if that's even possible without spending a bunch of cash and pulling modules..

I presume having one of these would need coding into the car to enable the parking sensors, etc?

Search the ICE forum on here for Columbus. Also I think @Rustynuts has a commercial page on here too.

I've spoken to adamyt by PM, but for completeness...

For Android Auto the best option would be an Amundsen II unit, but would been Component Protection removing and would also need Navigation, Bluetooth etc. reactivating. There are cheaper ways of getting Android Auto, but you lose some functionality in the process and invariably start getting involved with Chinese units.

Hi, does it mean that there is a way how to retrofit Rapid 2014-2015 with Amundsen MIB2 ?
