Superb MK2 buying advice / guide?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at buying a superb. Having read through loads of comments I can't work out what spec to go for. I have no real preference over estate or saloon but it's the engine & gearbox comments that are confusing me. I'd like elegance spec if possible.. I won't be doing massive mileage (probably less than 10k per annum).

From what I have read:

Diesel - low mileage might cause problems with DPF so better to go for petrol. However,

Petrol - TSI Engines known to have issues?

Automatic - if the auto box hasn't been maintained well or has been used for towing it may fail (very expensive fix)

Manual - best option?

A wide variety of BHP options - I don't need a massive engine but are the smallest engines too underpowered for a car of this size?

Is there a link to a buyers guide that has been compiled by members on here?

Many thanks!

PS Budget is 5-7k (GBP)

My Dad bought a 2012 Superb Elegance estate even though he is retired and doesn't cover many miles per year and tows a luxury 2 berth caravan twice a year and he has no problems with his car. In 2018 he paid £8,250 for his 66,000 mile example from the local dealer with the 6 speed DSG and 170PS (168bhp) and having driven it myself it is a very nice combination of power and economy and I got 54mpg. His car is now 8 years old and only 71,000 miles and the road tax is currently £205 per year.:hi: Welcome to Briskoda.

I bought a 2012 Superb Elegance in 2013, (when it was 9 months old), it's the 2.0 TSi with the 6-speed DSG. Current mileage is 37,200'ish, long-term petrol consumption is 35+ mpg, no problems with engine or the DSG, ('cos it's serviced every year, anything that needed to be done has been done) & it's a really nice car to drive.

I've never owned a car for 7+  years before & I'm struggling to find a suitable replacement, because it has space, decent handling, 'tis quiet & comfortable + it's much quicker than it looks (= "fun-factor") !

I've owned 2 VW's since I bought the Superb & it's still our "car of choice" for most journeys even though we do have quicker & newer cars to play with.

We've owned 2 other cars with 2.0 TSi engines + the 6-speed DSG, again if serviced properly at sensiblee intervals, no problems at all.

One point to remember, if you have a decent independent VW /Audi specialist near you, they will be very happy to maintain a Skoda, it's a VAG brand

with much commonality of parts.

I'm convinced that the 2.0 TSi Superb 2 is the best engine choice, quicker & quieter than the diesels, nearly as quick as the 3.6 V6 petrol but much cheaper to run / maintain.

Just my thoughts of course, but if I/we didn't like the car it wouldn't no longer be with us.

(It has its own garage too......)
