Hardwiring a dashcam - snag hit

Featured Replies

I had a Garmin dashcam installed by Halfords some time ago but it has given up the ghost for the second time and I have decided to replace it with a Nexbase product, the 522GW.   The Garmin and Nexbase use different USB plugs and having found that a simple USB converter was too wide to fit into the new window mount base.  I decided I would purchase the Nexbase hardwiring kit.  Having consulted previous articles within this forum and the pictorial guide on the other site I decided this was within my capabilities (No - age does not always bring wisdom!).  i removed the previous installation EXCEPT in the fusebox there is a  bottle shaped blackplastic Garmin marked device which I assume is the transformer to convert the 12v to 5v, visible in the picture with the wires coming from its top.

This is located behind a plastic grid which covers much of the fuse box aperture, is firmly affixed - I know not how - and cannot be removed through the existing opening using my fingers.  I removed the three screws holding the grid to the framework but cannot remove it as it seems to be attached in some way to the wrap around fascia panel.  Is it possible to safely remove the two screws holding the fuse box base to the bodywork and slide that to one side in order to get access to this 'bottle' - or am I better off admitting defeat and handing the whole lot to an auto electrician?

From what I can see the "thing" with Garmin written on it is the standard Garmin cigarette lighter plug fitment (which yes does convert 12v to 5v) and it is plugged into a "remote" additional cigarette lighter socket.

I don't see any grid. Do you mean the actual fuse board or do you mean the grey plastic item with lots of raised lines on it? That is part of the dash panel and would probably mean taking the whole dash apart to get it off.

I suspect that undoing the 2 mounting screws will release the fuse board but before doing so I would disconnect the battery just in case you touch anything on the back. I know that when the tow bar was fitted to my last Yeti that is what was done.

And personally using a piggyback fuse holder is MUCH easier!! There are instructions on how to do this in the Guide section.

Thanks for that.

Yes - I think you are right so  i will try pulling it upwards to see if I can remove it that way.  I was concerned that if left there would be no space to fit in the Nextbase kit equivalent.  I think you are right I think the 'grid' as I called it is fixed to the whole fascia.  The original Garmin was wired via a piggy backed fuse carrier which I removed in preparation for the new installation,

Would it be easier to remove if you separated the parts of (the socket and plug) that adapter?
