Newbie About to Take the Plunge

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

After many years of running old Toyota Land Cruisers I've taken the plunge and put down a deposit on an '09 Mk II Skoda Superb 170 4x4 with 123,000 on the clock, FSH, cambelt and waterpump at 97,000 and a 2yr warranty.

It's from a very reputable independent dealer, the Columbus isn't working (Skoda screen comes up but then goes dead adtgen repeats this process) but he has included a brand new unit (I do not know whether genuine Skoda or just a' replacement').

Before I commit to the full amount is there anything I should know/ask/demand!

Cheers

Trenchman

Congratulations on your impending new purchase - I hope you’ll find that like the majority of us you’ll be deeply impressed with your new acquisition. 😊

It’s not a big tech feature but on a geekery level, it’s always worth checking that the umbrella is located in the end of the passenger side rear armrest - (nearside on UK/RHD models At least) as it’s a nice thing to have. If not, replacements are available but it’s nice to still have the original. 👍🏻

Re the Columbus head unit, probably worth makIng sure that the replacement is a) fully-functional (obviously) and b) that it’s coded to the car and working and you get the anti-theft code which should come with it.

there are plenty others here far more equipped to give you pointers but these were a couple which sprung to mind.

Good luck, and enjoy!

cheers, D.

Thanks Ethel! Much appreciated!

Don't worry too much about the faulty Columbus, send it to me and I should be able to repair it for you. It sounds like a common fault.

Thanks Mucker

I think I've seen your posts about this. I won't be collecting her for a few weeks (I have terminal cancer and I'm still recovering from a transplant to keep me going a bit longer! 😁) but when I do I'll remove the unit and send it off to you.

Cheers

Trenchman

Trenchman - I’m truly sorry to hear that your health situation is less then ideal and I sincerely wish you every success with recovery from your recent transplant.
Keep us posted on your new wheels and I’m sure it goes without saying that all of us here wish you the very best and will gladly give you every assistance possible in enjoying your new acquisition.

That is so nice of you. Thank you.

Searching out the Skoda while receiving treatment was one thing that kept me going so this is something of a very special car to me.

I look forward to picking her up in a few weeks and hopefully joining the Skoda family I've found on this forum!

Ask the dealer whether the FSH on the Haldex included a oil change only or filter changes - Skoda only recommend a oil but NOT a filter change. If oil only and the 120000 M change has not been done do the filter as well.

Thanks for the tip!

At that mileage, if Skoda are saying there is a FSH including Haldex I wouldn't be surprised if the pump is already knackered.

Skoda only change the oil, their system does not recognise the filter as a service item nor do they remove the pump to clean the strainer hence it could be blocked.  Mine was cooked after 4 years and 35k miles despite a Skoda FSH....!  Problem is Haldex faults don't show up as a warning light and are only evident if you plug in a code reader (such as Carista, well worth 20 quid!) or if you notice front wheel spin pulling away from junctions.  I would recommend checking out the 4x4 operation as soon as you get the car while you have some recourse with the dealer.
