SUV variants of tyres

Featured Replies

was hoping to buy Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tyres, but only the standard non-SUV variety is in stock. how do they differ ?

SUV tyre is bigger and heavier due to sturdier material being used for load rating. They also have a more off road orientated tread pattern.

SUV and non-SUV tyres are often the same, except the SUV tyre will have SUV marked on the sidewall for marketing purposes and will often be a common SUV size.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is available in 74 different SUV sizes ranging from 17" tyres to 23" tyres.

Spot the difference...

This is a Michelin CrossClimate+ non-SUV tyre in size 215/65R16 102V XL

In the above example, the sensible SUV driver would buy the non-SUV tyre as it is the later plus model which has lower rolling resistance and better whole life performance.

Here they both are again on the Michelin website:

The SUV one gets cool white decals though

CrossClimate SUV's i have fitted.

No white decals, or white lettering.

Just the way the pics / images in the Michelin Site has them appear.

Do you know if in  the bigger sizes if the SUV and non SUV marked Michelin CrossClimates have the identical tread depth?

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/473898-tyre-tread-depth-changed

There is no difference in the tread depth for the same size tyre in the CrossClimates when comparing passenger car versions and SUV versions.

According to Michelin's website, there are 75 passenger car versions and 40 SUV versions of the CrossClimates. There only appears to be fours sizes of the CrossClimates that have both passenger car versions and SUV versions.

CrossClimate sizes that have both passenger car versions and SUV versions.

215/65R16

235/55R17

225/55R18

235/50R18

You can see the sizes of both passenger car versions and SUV versions of the CrossClimates using the following two links to Michelin's website:
