Boosting Dragon Box?

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Just had this reply from Mr.Hoot regarding pushing a bit more out of the dragon box:

". . . we program the units here at the workshop to specific settings for these vehicles. Some can take the max setting, some can't. If you'd like us to re-program your unit to a higher setting, we can do this but the risks are yours. Let me know if you'd like to go ahead . . ."

When he mentions 'risks', is he referring to drive train type risks? Or is he referring to the 'risks' we all take in boosting the power in our cars? A remap produces more power so one would assume that if a remapped car can take it, then this shouldn't be a problem?

Ta,

The difference is that a remap achieves these figures by raising fuelling and boost. The Dragon box will achieve them by solely increasing fuelling. If your car smokes with the Dragon box set to max, there's no point increasing the fuelling further as the fuel that's going in already isn't all being burnt....

I'm guessing the risks associated could be higher cylinder temps due to extra fuel going in which could lead to a failure. It depends if they've tested their "higher" settings as well as they've tested their production settings I guess. Worth asking them to clarify the risks if you're not sure....

Mine hardly smokes at all at the moment (if at all really), which is why I'm wondering if more fuel could still get in.

How long has the box been on? Same question to you Chris - how long did you have yours on for? Mine's going on on Friday (I reckon at about 13) but I'm wondering how long people use these trouble-free for?

Mine was an analog box and I ran if for about 22k miles (including 2 services and an MOT) trouble free :D

Had mine on for 10k miles (5 months about). No problems at all. :)

Set to max all that time?

Mine's a PD100 so it doesn't have the same settings (didn't really find any difference between the 7 settings the PD100 box has!) - but yes, set to max.

As long as you don't constantly thrash the engine, I can't see why there would be a problem.

I sent my digital tuning box back to dragon (on my mondeo) 3 times to get "turned higher", the end result was 170 bhp on the RR which is 32 bhp more than that TDCi 130 factory figures. The car went into limp mode twice during 20,000 miles, a quick adjustment and it was fine again. Also no fault codes where logged.

Mines been on for nearly 40k now and no problems, it's not set on max though, it's on the dragon recommended setting.

The only thing i'd be worried about is overfueling, if too much fuel is going in and not getting burned properly you will end up with bore wash. not good.

..recently put mine back in after I took it out for my first service in January. I forgot how good the thing was - put a smile back on my face:)

I have been running the Dragon digi box at setting 14 for 9months and 13k with no problems at all. Just like to keep shy of the 16 - makes me feel better - bit more headroom in the stress level dept.

I thought the box might have been inducing more smoke before my service but having driven without for 3months I realised there was little difference. Having said that - I expect in the higher temperatures of the summer air there will be less oxygen available to burn the fuel in the over-fuel mixture therefor a relatively greater increase in smoke over a non-boxed vrs.

..so I am assuming an (over-fueling) digi box is better suited to cold ambient temperatures than hotter ones. Where a re-map (both fuel / air mix + boost etc) would be a better option in high/er ambient temps (better opt all round!). Acknowledging - all cars benefit in performance from denser air (more o2) at lower ambient temps.

A remap doesn't alter the fuel/air mix on a diesel. The tuning box simply overfuels, the remap overfuels and raises boost :D Both will produce smoke if there isn't enough air (oxygen) available to burn :D

Chris

Andy's point is valid because yes it's overfuelling, but it's also shoving more air into the mix too so arguably there'll be less unburnt fuel from a remap.
