EGR valve on way out, again!

Featured Replies

hey all,

About a year ago I had the EGR valve replaced on my 2010  2.0 CR TDI 170 Superb for a costly £1000 with an indy around the corner. After about 4 months, the engine warning light came on for the first time, indicating the EGR valve was stuck open again.  I wasn't really chuffed, to say the least.

I normally fuel up at the local supermarket petrol station, but for once I used premium diesel..About half way through the tank, the warning light came on, without going into limp mode though.   After clearing it with the ODB-reader, it remained away for a few months, only to return the next time I do a 100 mile ride a few months later..The light comes and goes .     I suspect the engine, which has done about 145k miles, is quite worn or has quite some soot deposits inside, with every time I use premium fuel or a fuel additive , some of these deposits shift into the EGR and cause it to be stuck open, followed by a DPF regen one of the days after.

For now clearing the code seems to "solve" the warning light issue, but this is not a long term solution.  I suspect that eventually the EGR will give way for good, which at this rate will be a yearly cost of £1000 to replace it.  What are my affordable options to have this issue resolved for good?   Is mapping out the EGR a solution, and how will it affect the DPF? Are there any engine treatment services, or is there a a risk of clogging up the EGR and DPF and all pipes with that service?

You've probably seen / read this thread already, but if it not, it might be something worth considering (depending on if your intake manifold is of the old or the new design mentioned in the first post).

But given that it's less than 12 months since you had the EGR valve replaced, could you not approach the garage that did it and see if you are covered by a warranty?

I posted this a while back with some pictures of the egr valve (new one)

I always fill up with premium fuel (Esso) and have done since I bought the car with 26k on clock but mine packed in at approx 70k.

I took the old one apart but it wasn’t no where as bad as I was expecting after seeing some on YouTube.

Mine cost £420, egr valve ( genuine) gaskets etc and coolant from Tps plus my time fitting.

Don’t think am doing my car any good really with some of the short runs I do

The glow plug thing is not something I have seen on my dashboard (yet, touch wood)..  Unfortunately I do not have the space/knowledge to replace the EGR myself, only easy accessible things...   So I went back to the garage today, and they will take a read-out of the ECU next week....

Luckily when the EGR failed last summer, I had taken some pictures of the ODB-reader for EGR-percentage..At that time, the EGR rate was sitting at 45% in idle for a warm engine, while this time it is sitting only at 24 % in similar conditions. Does anyone know what normal percentages are for this engine type Superb Elegance MK2 CR TDI 2.0 170 (2010)  ?
