2010 Octavia electrical issues.

Featured Replies

Hi all I am slowly working through the faults on my ex NHS Octavia estate. As some of you may remember I have had some serious problems with it but thankfully it now runs and drives fairly well.

Long story short the car died and would not start for love nor money the day after I got it home and spent 6 months with an auto electrician tracing faults before he finally discovered a broken wire between the fuse box and the engine ECU.

Unfortunately the car now has a number of faults it didn't have before it went some of which really should not have happened. For instance, the car was returned to me with a major oil leak because the rocker cover had not been tightened down and the intake pipe had been left disconnected from the manifold. I was also promised that the main beam headlights had been fixed and imagine my surprise when the first time I drove it after dark I had no main beam.

Most of the major issues have now been sorted but there are a number of faults that I would appreciate some advise on.

1) I have replaced the steering rack due to massive play in the original and have managed to get the the steering light on the dash to go out by calibrating the steering angle sensor in the steering assistance module using my OBD Eleven pro. However, I am still getting a code for no signal from steering angle sensor in the ABS module and as such the ASC light is illuminated. The code in the steering assistance module cleared and I can read live data for the steering angle sensor in the steering assistance module but not through the ABS module.

2) Main beam headlights do not work at all. The tell tale comes on the dash but the bulbs do not light up. I have replaced the bulbs to no avail. I have no voltage getting to the bulb so I suspect a wiring issue, is there any part of this circuit that is known to chafe? The auto electrician replaced the indicator stalk but this did not solve the problem and has also introduced others.

3) Cruise control no longer works and I am getting a code for missing signal from steering wheel electronics that apparently relates to it. This was working perfectly well on the old stalk.

4) Front fogs don't work and again there was no problem with these before the electrician had it.

5) Climatronic blower doesn't work.

6) Remote central locking is not working and I have only 1 key so cant use a second key to reprogram the key.

I know the auto electrician has replaced the body control unit and the indicator stalk as both originals were left in the car and I am getting fault codes for incorrectly coded modules.

I have just done a full system scan using OBD Eleven and include the report here.

I'd probably start by putting the original BCM and steering control modules back in.

1) I think there is an adaption channel to specify where the steering angle sensor is, possibly in 03 ABS or 44 steering assistance.

2) I'd agree it's likely wiring given the tell tail works. Check T52aa/5 and T52ac/46 on the BCM go the left and right main beam bulbs.

3) The 16 steering controller coding is definitely wrong, maybe try 0000034 as that might get CC back - the ABS issue could also cause this.

4) This is down to the 09 BCM coding, byte 14, bit 0 should be 1 to enable front fogs.

5) Check the blower fan is free to move?

6) You need to pair both remotes. VCDS can do this but not sure about OBDeleven.

Thanks any idea what channel number that would be for steering angle adaptation? The only warning light for this showing is the ASC light. Steering wheel light was on but successfully cleared after doing the basic settings procedure in the steering assist module. Through the steering assist module live data I can pick up a steering angle sensor reading if I try and read through the abs module it reads zero regardless if steering wheel position.

As far as the other faults go I have changed byte 14 in BCM coding to 1 and OBDeleven now reads front fogs as fitted although they still don’t work.
Steering column module will not recode. I go into coding it will allow me to enter a new code to write but as soon as you try to write it it the software says function unavailable.

Blower fan is seized solid and unfortunately I only have one key.

Your main beam problem may be due to incorrect rewiring. In NHS use it may have had the lights wired to another unit to give alternate flashing headlights. In which case you need to connect the lights to the original lighting wiring from the on-board power control unit (early models) or equivalent on face-lift models.

In the same vein,  03138 - Input AUX IN Open circuit may be because the radio aux input was connected to a 2 way radio transceiver and the original wiring to the aux input was not reconnected.

Fault  01503 - Bulb for high-mount brake light Open circuit/short circuit to B+  similarly may be due to its use for other purposes in the past such flashing with the "blues and twos". Check wiring.

Hi - don't want to highjack your post so I have sent you a PM with a question about this. :)

Problems now all solved.

Main beam issue was caused by original wiring from the BCU multiplugs having been disconnected and the same pin having been wired to a no longer existent control unit for flashing with blue lights. Thankfully the original wiring was still present, so just a matter of reconnecting the wire as per the wiring diagrams and we have main beams again.

Problem with the ASC light was because I have an MK60EC1 ABS unit and in 44 Steering Assist the steering angle sensor inside the rack was adapted active. Once I turned that off the ABS module starting picking up it's signal from the sensor behind the steering wheel and all warning lights are now off.

I am pleased that your persistance has paid off, it must feel rewarding.
