6spd box into a 4x4 - Can it be done? If so what's involved?

Featured Replies

My numbers from stuart's car come from the information on the members page, so I guess it's a bit outdated :(

350 bhp + 40% = 490 bhp!

 At 490hp, there's a whole lot of things to upgrade.

Will we get to follow the whole process closely or will it be a "secret" formula?

Got to love that math! I'm sure you'll get exactly what you aim for Eddy, you're the kind of guy who won't stop until completely satisfied. Barring JBS employees, family and close friends, I've got the first ticket for a high speed passenger ride! JBS VRS vs Eddy's 4x4 will be an interesting drag.

Sounds like its going to be a fun car Eddy, can't wait to see the results of your conversion

Is the 6spd box similar ratios to the 5spd but with an extra cruising gear, or is 6th similar to 5th, with shorter lower gear ratios?

I suspect that 6th would be longer than 5th on your present box, and the rest of the gears would be shorter... meaning you'd overall have a shorter ratio box. Would this actually be very useful on a car with that sort of power?

Surely you'd want longer gears if anything to prevent you running out of revs stupidly quickly, and having to change gear every 3 seconds?

Usually short ratio boxes make better use of small power, but big power needs long ratio boxes to make it drivable.

AFAIK, 5th on a 5-speed is very similar to 6 on a 6-speed, although both are higher than 5th on the 4x4 5-speed.

Having said that, while the 'box is out of the car being strengthened, you can do what you want...

The 6 speed gearbox is more than a 5 speed with an extra gear. The multi shaft design is much stronger and the gear selector mechinism is much better. I think the fact that it is stronger is why it is used as std in PD130 vehicles.

Im still puzzled as to why a 6 speed wouldnt fit though. At the most I would guess that it would need a new propshaft, perhaps due to the difference in wheelbase length. Front and rear axles are the same as a TT etc so there shouldnt be any difference there.

i didn't get scared by a custom prop phil as i phoned around and found ou how much it costs and was pleasantly surprised.

the 6 speed is still on the cards for me :D

So were Jabba !!

It wasnt until the box was offered up that it became aparent it would not fit, the prop shaft end dosent match the box, thats easy to sort but the big problem is that the point at which it outputs from the rear of the box is in a slightly different position which means the prop shaft runs slightly out of line, OK it would work in the short term but with large amounts of power I believe the life of the shaft joint would have been severly comprimised.

The other option is to realign the shaft along the car which would be better but not ideal

My old box when stripped showed signs of wear on the diff but nothing too drastic & the car had run 60000 hard miles, OK only a few thousand with 350 bhp but a lot with just over 250.

In Hindsight I think the cost of the 6 speed conversion is high with all the other bits that are needed including Flywheel, Starter, Shorter Drive Shaft, Linkages modded clutch hydralics etc etc

If I was intending to run the kind of Power you are thinking of I would go for a custom built box specced to what you want & with a guarantee, After all you will be fitting a box that might struggle with approaching 500 bhp & also a lot of the bits are second hand so might come with problems of their own.

My intention was always to build a circa 350 bhp car that is very driveable on a day to day basis with a wide useable powerband & Ive achieved that. I also never do drag starts as Im sympathetic to the car, especially with 4wd where theres no release for too much power & the transmission takes the full strain

The change to RS internals & strengthening the Diff was in my view an economical solution to the poor ratios of the 4x4 once you start running bigger power.

A good secondhand box shouldnt cost more than

I want a strengthened VAG box rather than a custom box such as those offered by quaife as I know Bill has been down this route and ended up reverting to an OEM box.

It looks like a VAG 6spd box will be the best option for both strength and improved gear ratio's. It's just a matter of getting it to fit and how much it will cost.

I'm having photo's taken throughout the install so will be making lots of details public, however certain details that my tuner of choice wish to keep to themselves won't be posted for obvious reasons.

Ive heard R32 mentioned by someone with reosnable knowledge, possibly add that to the equation.

Already asked about this and was told it definetely won't fit. :( This was from someone who had a R32 box available to look at. They did tell me the reason and it was something to do with a particular part being completely different, what part that was though I can't remember. :o

I see about the transfer box being out of alignment. Must be to do with the box on the 02J being a different place to the 02M. A note worth making is that the 5 speed Audi TT doesnt use the same 5 speed as the Octavia. The 5 speed TT uses a 5 speed 02M multishaft box. Kind of a six speed with a cog missing.

"Bump"

Keep this thread going lads, I've a 4x4 too.

That would also probably explain the situation I described in my first post where an A3 Quattro owner fitted a 6spd box.

If the issue with the prop lining up is a left-right issue do you think this could be overcome by moving the engine as I understand it has a number of positions left to right on which it can be mounted?

Simpletons comment but if you move the engine sideways in the car are you then into bespoke driveshafts ??

If 6 speeds isnt essential would the 5 speed TT box Lummox mentioned be worth considering. If its a multishaft box as the 6 speed then it should have the strength you are looking for. Its worth a quick calc to see if top is high enough. remember when doing this calc that you should also have a higher revving engine once you have tweaked it. The theoretical top with mine running RS ratios is now a whisker over 190, something I will never see

I also guess the demand for 5 speed TT boxes is fairly low so a cheap one should be easier to find. Also how much is a new one or if exchanges are available buy a dog rough one & do that

I believe it actually moves the wheels slightly as I've noticed on a few Octavia's that the front wheels sit in the arch on each side differently. Currently on mine the drivers side wheel is a little further out than the passenger side.

I could be talking **** though, and it was more a question for LUmmox as to if it's even possible.

I've now been given a price for fitting a 6spd box along with driveshafts and other bits and it's pretty reasonable, unfortunately the price of a suitably upgraded clutch and flywheel doubles this price. Not sure what route I'll be taking yet but will keep this thread updated.

How are they overcoming the problems

PM me if you prefer

PM Sent.

I'll post details for everyone else once I have more concrete details. :)

Quick update; I've given the go ahead for the 6spd conversion on my car along with a Spec Stage 3+ clutch and flywheel. I won't have any news on how it's gone until about 3 weeks time as that's when my engine will be going back in.

Can you reveal the details yet Eddy?

If you mean about how the problems with fitting the 6spd box will be overcome then no as I don't know myself.

If you mean regarding the spec details of what I'm having done then yes, I intended to start a new thread which I'll also post progress photo's in.

I did mean the 6spd box problems but i'll be more than happy undulging myself in the details of your grand plan instead.
