Headlight Upgrade

Featured Replies

Hey Folks

Apologies this has likely been asked several times before. I did rake through this forum and try to find answer on the below question so hope someone can help.

have a MK3 Octavia with standard halogen lights and wondering if I could replace them with LED's bulbs or even exchange the unit for XENONS. Has anyone done similar that could advise? I have seen a video online where the fog lights were replaced with LEDS's and they looked awesome!

So far found the below.

I do want to upgrade and wondered what the options are.

Cheers Lee

I would avoid led as they will fail an mot. They are not designed for the halogen headlight housing. I would opt for some uprated halogen bulbs and then get the headlights aligned.

It depends if you want to stay road legal or not :)

Fitting either LED or xenon/HID 'bulbs' in to halogen headlights should now be an MOT failure so I wouldn't advise it. You'll also cause plenty of glare given the reflector design of the original headlights.

The alternative is fitting original xenon headlights, level sensors, wiring, AFS controller and headlight washers to match a factory install. The latter is obviously much more effort but the results will be better ;)

Its a lot of work (assuming you can get the parts at a reasonable price), also some BCM are compatible some are not.  I looked into it and gave up in the end.

Your best bet is a decent set of Halogens - those LED and aftermarket kits whilst looking brighter (and being irritating to oncomers) are actually quiet often dimmer when tested on a lighting rig.

H7's just come out - Philips RacingVision GT200 car bulbs elevate your automotive experience. Up to 200% brighter light

I just had a quick look at those - it says the lifespan is 250 hrs.  Doesn't seem a lot, based on my driving the bulbs could be shot within 4 months!

Thanks all for the great advice :)

Think I will go for uprated Halogens and also look for a DRL LED strip to place around the fog light area, hopefully that's not illegal/MOT fail :@

I like the GE 150% brighter that you get at Halfords, thats what I ran in my Scout.  Near to winter they quite often go BOGOF so it works out £20 ish a pair.  I then ran the Osram night breakers cool blue in full beam - enough of a coating to make the DRL seem a little whiter but not so much that it effected the full beam performance.  I had originally tried a really blue bulb in full beam (they were about £15 a pair) to get that white effect on the DRL but the light output was so compromised at night it wasn't obvious full beam was on so i took them out a week later and binned them :D

E marked DRL addons, like the Ring ones you get from Halfords, are perfectly legal to add and won't be an MOT failure. But they have to be E marked so no Chinese cheapos off ebay.

Good shout, found them on Halfords B)

Avoiding EBay far too risky!

Fitted some Nightbreakers in the dips, what an easy job compared to the Fabia Mk3. You can get your hands in and they just pop out and in.

Ok so the 2020 Philips RacingVision GT200 went into today and have just been tested, very impressed as by far the best halogen I have seen, I bought from ABD. If they burn out I buy more, price will be more sensible soon.

I have the facelift model so full beam also H7, had some old but unused Philips RacingVision 150's for those, good but 50% less than the GT's but can live with that as full beam use limited.

Loved how easy the fit was, has been a real pain on some cars!

FYI picture or original H7 provided

I also want to change the front indicator bulbs, look awkward, anyone done it?

On the Oct 3 pre facelift I thought you had to break the hard cover plastic that provides access to the indicator bulb, and that there was a kit (ie new plastic cover) that you then had to glue back over the indicator bulb access hole.  It seemed a ball ache so I never bothered.
