Is it possible to delete AFS?

I have a steering headlight fault on my 12 plate superb, it's been into two garages for repair, one replaced the faulty front level sensor and suggested the next step would be to replace the loom on the front side of the car as I've previously had a broken wire from abs sensor.

2nd garage gave me the printouts attached and said they couldn't fix it but the two different results from front and rear sensors don't make sense and it would be a main dealer problem which I'm very reluctant to do as they're useless if the computer doesn't give them the answer and they're expensive.

Hence my initial question could it be deleted thus clearing the fault which I've been told is now an MOT failure.

If you toggle travel mode on the infotainment, AFS/AHL is disabled.

Not sure if fully or partly. Presumably it defaults to flat beam too. MOT only tests beam pattern statically

When the fault first appeared I lost the ability to toggle between travel mode and normal.

As you have xenons, you need to keep the AFS module as that does the self-levelling to keep them road-legal and MOT worthy.

 

Based on the above, I'd agree that the wiring to the front sensor maybe damaged and I'd run three new wires between the level sensor and AFS master to rule that out :)

Do you know if the wiring goes directly to and from there?

 

I haven't got a wiring diagram for a Superb to hand but I'd expect it to be identical to my Octavia when I retrofitted xenons as I believe they use the same AFS master.

 

The format is connector/pin so for example T26e/6 is pin 6 on connector T26e:

- T26e/6 to T4e/4
- T26e/12 to T4e/1
- T26e/25 to T4e/2

 

T4e will be the connector for the front sensor, T26e will be the connector for the AFS master. At a guess, the AFS master is in the centre console behind the HVAC panel, at least that's the position for the Octavia :)

Thanks, I'll have a chat with my mechanic and see if he's willing to try it!

Failing that I may try it myself, how hard can it be!!! Lol

Starting point would just be to compare the wire colours at the level sensor connector to the AFS master. If those pins match for colour, there is a good chance I'm right :)

 

I'm pretty sure that the original wiring would have both the ABS sensor and AFS level sensor join to a single loom so replacing one, may have caused issues with the other.

 

So given your ABS wiring issue on that corner, depending how they fixed it, any connections they made could be causing this too.

You might be better off looking for a good auto-electrician who is up to date on vehicle technology if you're not sure about doing it yourself.

I just checked the Superb manual and yes the AFS master is behind the centre console on the Superb too.

 

Going back to the first post, the mechanic is misunderstanding the system slightly. There's a single sensor on the front and it can throw the 00496 code for open circuit or short to ground. Both stand a good chance of being due to bad wiring. @langers2k is on the money regarding wiring from the wheelarch up: the ABS wheel speed sensor and the ride height sensor share wiring from the wheelarch into the engine bay (and the brakepad wear sensor too). The part number for a replacement harness is 1K0927903J. The replacement part ends in bare wires in the engine bay, so you'll be soldering it if you have to replace it.

 

The front ride height sensor connector is T4ax, and the connector at the controller is T26b. Pin assignments, wire colours & function are:

  • T4ax/1 -> T26b/11, brown, ground
  • T4ax/2 -> T26b/10, black, +5 v
  • T4ax/4 -> T26b/7, blue, signal

If you can get a probe on each end of those pairs you can at least check for continuity on the wires and go from there. If you've previously had wiring issues with the ABS wheel speed sensor, then a new harness may be a good idea. A quick search on Google suggests it's not a particularly expensive part (~€60).

Small update, have ordered a new speed sensor/xenon/brake wear sensor loom and it's booked into a local recommended  auto electrician on the 26th!!! of this month.

Will update further then.
