Quick update - all plugs and leads changed along with the coil pack. Put some cleaner in and thrashed it about a bit, everything running great now. Glad the issue was as not as serious as some other people ...

    I had battery disconnected for half an hour perhaps.   Air filter is basically looking like brand new.

    It might be as you say, the oil seperator not doing its job properly.   Check the pcv (positive crankcase valve) system is not blocked and causing over pressure in the crankcase.
