The Octavia still makes me smile.

Featured Replies

I've been driving me normal B-Road commute for the last couple of months like a total granny (recently with CC set at about 50mph). But this morning I decided to push the car as hard as I could. :D :D :D It was nice to see the Octavia can still make me smile.

Now I have my hoses and MAF sorted it is much happier to rev round to 7k and I found myself driving it almost like my old Integra - high revs all the time. :D

Don't kill it before the Z arrives!

Sedate driving will be resumed after the weekend's RR meet :D Gotta train my ECU ;)

Gotta train my ECU ;)

Thats so true! Gonna have to hammer my car at the weekend!

Does how you drive really affect the ecu?

Does how you drive really affect the ecu?

Yes - it learns from recent driving. I believe if the car were in sedate mode, it can be effectively reset by unplugging the battery from the car for an hour or so. :) Not sure what mode is resets in though?

We're only talking about marginal differences though. Not that your car will gain 20bhp by hammering it everywhere. Its just after a nice long sedate run it won't be quite as willing to be pushed as far as if you'd been driving in a spirited fashion. :)

Disconnecting the battery will not reset the learning process. It is reset by using VAG-COM and clearing fault codes from the engine (even if there are none) - thats what a well known VAG techie told me anyway ;)

I tend to be fairly sedate for most of the time with the occasional rush of blood to the head/right foot. So, I now have a reason to give the missus when I'm booting it - that I'm actually training the car for when I do need to put my foot down. This is what I've been looking for for years. Cheers guys!

You should also tell her that the turbo will get clogged if its not given a regular burn up ;) New turbos can be very expensive so you want to take care of this one.

Keep 'em coming. Anything like this is useful in the bloke/missus war on speed. If I can give a valid reason (with a few tech bits thrown in) then I can almost get away with it. Although I've learned to drive like a granny when the wife is in with me and it save sooo much trouble. But there are those occasions i.e. clear road, Corsa Boy, perfect sweeping curve when you just have to live a little, regardless of the noise in your left ear.

going fast round corners: "I'm carrying speed around corners so I can stay in a higher gear and ease wear and tear on the brakes, and improve economy too by not needing lower gears/higher revs"

(if she mentions tyre wear, you're screwed on that argument though  )

Tell her the tyres are designed to be run at a given angle of attack, therefore cornering faster is best for them and will prolong their life*

*This is total rubbish but she may fall for it.

I could try that one, but I'll have to ration these excuses - sorry - 'Technical Reasons' out so as not to arouse suspicion. Wish me luck.

I'm pretty sure resetting the ECU won't buy you any bhp gains at all - it's just how the car responds to your driving style....

   Sounds a bit like my experiences when Mr P is in my car!

Drive it like you rented it. That's the whole point of performance cars :)

its not that you gain power when driving like a tit so much as you lose power when driving like your nan :)

and i have found it to be quite noticible myself :)

:D will have 2 test this on the wife next time im overtaking,

Yep, mine still makes me smile too. The harder it's pushed the better it feels and then ease-off for good economy :)

That reminds me, I've still got to give my colleague's new Boxster 2.7 a good Skoda-spanking -I have offered to show him the good roads.....

Is your fuel consumption issue sorted then, Phil?
