Just put a deposit down on a 2017 Yeti 4x4 2.0L SE L 150PS DSG in Pearl Grey with 35k miles, 1 previous keeper.

Took it for a test drive and it drove lovely. Has some nice extras.

I wanted this model for towing my caravan, I know they are well thought of for their towing capabilities.

Think I'll call it 'Spag' (spaghetti) but I'm guessing thats not very original by now?

It's supposed to have had its 30k mike Haldex service, but only got the Skoda dealers word for it.

Is it worth getting my local independent Skoda garage to do it, just to be safe? Does it cost around £100?

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of Yeti....

It is worth noting that when the main dealers service the Haldex they would not normally take the filter out and clean it. For that reason I took mine to a local indy specialist and asked them specifically to change the oil and remove and clean the filter....I think they charged about £70 for this....and yes if it were me i would get it done given the horror stories i have read on this forum!.....and make sure they use the correct drain plugs as per another recent post!

...enjoy your Yeti

Edited by Stubod

Definitely because they will not have removed the pump to clean the filter that does not exist on their planet.

Make sense, theres a couple of independent VAG/Skoda garages where i live in Sheffield so I'll book it in, especially if its no more than £100.

Did Skoda provide the electronic service history print out?

Haldex Service should be listed separately.

Shop around,  my local indy did oil and filter clean on a haldex5 for £68 inc vat.

^^^

Amazing given the cost of parts even at trade price.

They must be taking a very low hourly rate.    They can not be paying much tax on profits.

Only charging £56.66 or so without VAT for parts and labour.

I'll inspect the service paperwork when I collect the car.

Surprised that a local independent VAG garage told me the Haldex doesn't need looking at until 40k miles and no cleaning needed. I won't be using them.

Thankfully theres another one local to me who I'm going to phone today.

I suppose that there will be some garages that expect every customer to pay for the syringe tool they use to do the job on the basis that they had to buy it specially.

My Haldex service cost €19 in TVA for 1 litre of oil delivered from Germany, no need to change filler or drain plugs except to boost garage profits (my opinion, others will do what they feel comfortable with) & I didn't change the O rings as they were in good condition & any leak would be visible, I have hundreds of various size O rings plus O ring cord & a splice set so dont need to purchase O rings just in case.

I would be happy with £68 to do a Haldex service & oil change but am just a Fred in a shed & dont have a shiny showroom & staff overheads to pay.

Thanks J.R

I've started a separate thread regarding the Haldex, as the replies here will no doubt be missed by anyone searching under the subject.

Im looking forward to picking up the Yeti though. I need to ask the dealer if the Appleplay smartlinkk thing needs activating, and find some floor mats.

@J.R.

20% is VAT if being charged from the customer to pass to HMRC not to keep.

So not £68 to the garage, if they are registered for VAT.

Not changing drain plugs, 'o' rings or filters might well be a decision made as a vehicle is worked on and inspected but not something that can just be dismissed before hand as you can find anything once you start a job.

If the same people / place are doing regular servicing on the same vehicle they might well know what they need to do or replace.

They are in business for gain or reward after all and not just charities.

Filter can't be changed anyway on this later unit, but must be cleaned. When, not if, the uncleaned filter blocks it will write off the unit which should otherwise last the life of the car.

My Skoda dealer was aware of this and even mentioned cleaning the filter as part of servicing it.

One local indie told me they don't clean it, they replace with new unit instead, but that obviously made them more expensive than others.

Well they would change the filter on the earlier cars as it is replaceable. Hence servicing that should be more expensive as you need to buy the filter as well. Changed the unit about 2014 or so to the later Haldex 5 unit in your car.

I would be suspicious of their servicing if they don’t know what’s in your car

No, they said they replace the whole unit, not just  the gauze/seive as they can't be replaced separately.

Finally picked up the Yeti from the dealer today. Wasn't supposed to be getting it until next Friday when the wifes redundancy money gets paid, but with potential lockdown restrictions coming in where I live I wanted to get it sooner rather than later. Thankfully my mother stepped in and lent me the cash to pay for it.

I ended up putting some of the purchase price on Skoda/VW finance to get the warranty extended by a year and two services for £79. I will be withdrawing from the finance in a day or two and settling the account.

Had a nice drive home in it, now got to read the handbook to learn whats what and get Apple CarPlay working.

First expense will be Haldex clean, Skoda have done the 3 yr Haldex service but probably won't have cleaned the sieve.

Then I'll be getting a towbar fitted for the caravan, and a Hatchbag boot liner for the dog.

Getting Apple CarPlay working depends on whether “Smartlink” is installed on the radio. It is an optional extra that costs approx £125 when fitted from new, I believe it can be installed later but you have to pay Skoda the £125 (ish) for the coding to activate it on your radio.

Was it installed from new? Otherwise you are looking at having to pay Skoda to get it working.

It would appear not, when connecting with my iPhone cable the menu says I need an activation key. I'll probably get it done but I'll ring a few dealers to see if theres any price differences.

All Yeti's from around 2015 with MIB-2 head units had Smart-Link installed but it was always an option to have it activated.

From the Factory it was on offer for £50 for a while but most dealers charge £130 to purchase the code from Skoda and program in the activation key.

ive just phoned my local Skoda dealer and they charge £130 for the activation plus £57.70 Labour, making it £187.70.
Think I’ll phone the dealer I bought it from and see if they’ll do it cheaper.

Anyone know if it works with Amazon Music on my iPhone, or is it just Apple Music?

Rainworth Skoda did mine for £130,

Not sure about the iphone I ditched apple many years ago.  Certainly on Android Auto I can play music on my phone (1.5TB's worth), any of the streaming services (I use Amazon Prime HD) or even stream music from my NAS at home. And of course radio stations from the likes of TuneIn. All via voice control while navigating with Google Maps.

It was Skoda Rainsworth Sheffield that quoted me £187.

Skoda Hayselden Doncaster where I purchased my Yeti have quoted £146 which aligns with what you paid.

A smarter customer than me would have negotiated this with the price of the car, but I didn’t have my thinking head on at the time

You can't think of everything! Smartlink allows you to use many of the Apps on your phone and is great as a SatNav with Google or Waze with map on radio screen. Much better than built in SatNav in my opinion.

Trouble is all these extras add up! Haldex service, Smartlink, tow bar etc - and worth getting Skoda towbar and fitting to make sure electrics are sorted properly.

Good luck, I am on my second Yeti and now can't find anything else to swap it for when time comes.

I’m phoning a few places for towbars with dedicated wiring. Not sure if Skoda dealers fit them but they would probably charge a fortune.
