To access the Climatronic control unit you will need something specific, it is not an OBD system.

Ta for that. So, in effect, you're saying it would need to go back to the main dealer rather than take it to the independant I mentioned ? I don't have access to anything specific, nor do I have the experience/knowledge to use it even if I did.

Or are you thinking it needs to go to an air con specialist?  - or maybe  a vehicle electrics specialist?

If he has something like a Snap On multi-marque system that can interrogate the individual modules he will probably be able to read the relevant codes.

In view of the fact that it works when the engine is fully warmed up, and if I turn it right up to MAX, then maybe I should just put up with it.  Like I say it's a 9 year old car and you start to wonder if you should spend too much on it.

That's something I don't know without asking - and if I DO ask is he going to give me an honest answer?  I'm in the hands of others and at their mercy. No matter how much you value your independent garage you're never 100% sure you're doing the right thing  ... letting him loose on something so vague and indeterminate sounds like a recipe for big bills that might not be a good idea..

I Googled Snap On multi marque and drew a complete blank.

Not at all. I have VCDS and could read it. Any decent VAG Indie should at least have that if not dealer level equipment.

He's not a VAG specialist. He does all/most makes and used to specialise in French makes.

Ta for that - appreciated.

devonutopia is only half an hour from me.  I'm not far from Newton Abbot and he's in Exmouth, which I know quite well.

I don't know how someone such as he operates though ... I'm guessing if he would agree to use his equipment then we come to some agreement about recompense for his time and expertise?  Would he and his equipment be able to pinpoint such a thing with VCDS?  (I'm not familiar with it despite hearing folk speak about it here).

I think I'd be interested to know if replacement of one (or more) of these temperature sensors involved pulling the dash out.  As mentioned before I really don't fancy that.  Maybe I'm over estimating the problem?

First step would be to message him and ask.

I hope that wouldn't be seen as an imposition - or, to put it another way, taking the ****  (insert an apropriate word).

People are added to the map at their request because they offer the service. It's hardly going to be an imposition.

Understood ... ta.

Beer tokens changed hands when I needed some VCDS work done.

With that same gentleman in Exmouth?

Or you could try resetting temps using this

That was suggested above and, unfortunately, it didn't work.

No. It is completely different.

You're right, it's a different thing.

But I'm not sure what I would re-set the temperatures to ....

You could reset them to the temperatures you originally wanted!

(Not as easy as I made it sound, though.)

I'll have a closer look.

I wonder why the settings would deviate from from they wee originally set to though?

I'm thinking something like the battery going flat and it losing it's manufacturer settings?  I do know that once the battery did go flat (due to my leaving the lights on) and the trip mileage reset to zero - so presumably there could be other settings that get lost when the voltage drops too low?

Good luck!
