Yesterday I took the plunge and replaced my original chrome peeling gear knob with a Chinese aftermarket replacement .

 

I ordered the new knob from Ali express and it cost me £21.00 including post and packing . Only time will tell if I've made the right decision !

 

 After waiting for a several weeks the new unit arrived, I replaced it yesterday afternoon.

 

The process was a bit fiddly and a little nerve racking but only took about 45 minutes. There were a few difficulties , like cutting off a retaining clamp to release the old knob and refitting the leather  to the new knob. 

 

I have been in contact with another Briskoda member in New Zealand, who was tremendously helpful, and he supplied me with copies of the workshop manual and a lot of moral support.

So glad it worked for you.  Also... I'm in Australia.
