Roomster, Yeti (or estate?) to carry an MTB or two

Featured Replies

Hi, I have got a brand new car that I would like to keep that way and so am looking for something older and reliable at around the 4-5k mark for infrequent tip runs and more frequently slinging an MTB (ideally 2) in the back of without too much difficulty.  Removing removable seats are ok as they can live in the garage.   Don't mind taking the front wheel off the MTB, but prefer to leave the rear on (some sort of desire not to get myself covered in oil, plus it makes the frame easier to wheel in and out)    I would appreciate member's thoughts and experiences.   I tried to find out the load lengths of the Roomster and Yeti with the rear seats removed but the passenger seat in a normal position but could only find something for the yeti (1.6m if I recall correctly).  Thanks in anticipation.

Thank you.  I’m not as good at searching as I thought I was!

I've owned two Roomsters and I currently own a Yeti.  There is definitely more room in a Roomster, particularly if you intend to carry a spare wheel.  Roomster's spare wheel lives in a well in the floor of the boot, so doesn't take up any boot space.  Yeti's spare wheel lives on the floor of the boot which if carried, effectively raises the floor of the boot to the level of the sill.  The spare wheel shown in e-Roottoot's first picture is not in the manufacturer's intended location.  Also note the sill in Roomster's boot is closer to the ground than Yeti's (around 6" from memory) which makes loading easier.  Hope this helps.

Does the rear door cill/bumper sit flush with the boot floor level in the Roomster?

How do they drive ride & comfort wise compared to a Yeti or Octavia, do you feel like you are driving a hatchback or something larger?

I am still very tempted!

They feel like you are driving a taller Fabia Estate.

Which you kind of are. They can be modded just like a Fabia wheel / suspension wise and be used as campers as members have and as shown in the Roomster & Roomster Project sections.

Boot floor of Roomster is (from memory) around 6" below sill height.

I believe Roomster is basically the front end of a Fabia mated to the back end of an Octavia.  Yeti is essentially a Mk5 Golf on stilts.  I find the ride comfort of my Yeti SE similar to that my Roomster SE although obviously, the driving position is higher.  I don't find find the seats in either especially comfortable, but I am the exception and I must have an oddly shaped @rse.  I found the firmer seats in my Roomster Scout hugely more comfortable, but Scout's low-profile tyres spoilt the ride.

If Skoda still manufactured the Roomster Scout, I would have one tomorrow.

Since the do not getting a VW Caddy Life or whatever makes sense for carrying bikes in.

Or a Seat Alhambra / VW Sharan, sliding side doors.

For 5k you could pickup a decent Yeti 4x4 which would be ideal if you are going to off-road sites for your bike , the Yeti has a Haldex clutch so has 'intelligent' 4x4 meaning its in 2 wheel drive most of the time ( good for fuel efficiency) but is always there if you need it and a hill descent button which works forwards and backwards gradually moving you forwards or backwards without losing control. Its chunky, well built, has roof rails for a storage box for all your bike spares and the rear seats can be fully removed making a big boot space and saving weight too ... yes I have one and its an absolutely amazing car .

Not all Yeti 4x4 have an Offroad / Hill Descent Button.

All do need a Haldex Service every 3 years or maybe sooner as there are enough about not giving AWD on demand.
