Best places are jewelers and watch specialists :) Some high end ones are very cheap just now but having them verified and certified by the maker can be very exspensive! I was offered a Rolex "red" Sumariner for silly money but having it checked was over two grand!! Unfortunately its one of the most faked watches on the planet!! There are watches to be had on ebay but you really have to be careful and checked all docs and serial numbers:)

K:)

what about a reputable pawn broker (thats pawn not porn Tom :P) would they have had watches verified before taking them in??

If your spending a huge amount of money on a timepiece, and you have to admit spending at lerast 1-2k on a watch is a lot, then I'd only stick to authroised dealers and buy a brand new watch. Used watches can have hidden problems, and then theres the problem of authenticity.

Build up a rapport with an AD and they'll treat you well. I bought a Mont Blanc pen the other week. Had it three days and noticed two tiny marks in the resin. The manager ordered a brand new one and replaced it without any fuss. Also knocked off 10% off the RRP and threw in some bottles of Mont Blanc ink too.

Had a few issues with the watches too and apart from the Speedie (incidentally they changed for a band new one after Omega messed up the origional) which is still missing the certificate, the others have been sorted out very quickly. If you buy one online it is harder to deal with soemone who you cant speak to face to face, nor can you see the actual item before you purchase it. As for Pawn(porn)brokers and other places, who knows how long they'll be around for? At least with an AD if the particular branch closes you can always find another one or even deal with head office.

Where do you tend to go for Omega servicing Irf?

Steve

None of them are old enough to be serviced, but the Seamaster got the crystal replaced and the brushed finish on the casing and bracelet refinished as it was covered in scratches. Goldsmiths send it back to Swatch UK who service Omegas over here. The turnaround is 3 months. They did give me the option of sending it back to Bienne, however that would have been a 6 month turnaround. Swatch UK aren't fantastic in terms of communication, and it had to get sent a second time round before they actually refinished the housing and bracelet. But the watch was brand new when it came back and apparently they gave it a service anyway due to the crystal being replaced.

Breitling UK were much better and although the turnaround time was around the same, 3 months, they refinished the polished finish of the watch and realigned the bezel first time round!

My bell & Ross cost me 400 euro for a service and my Fortis was 350!! I have a good rapport with with many second hand dealers so i havent been shafted yet and i have a good eye for a deal!!...To me its like going to a car boot sale......sometimes you see something and think i know what that is and i think its worth a punt!! Only buy new if you can get a good deal on it or know that you can sell on to fund the next purchase, or youl be stuck with a watch that plummets in value!!

After a quick play with ER convertors, I just paid the equivalent of 434 euro for a basic service, cambelt kit and waterpump! (includes antifreeze topup, and spare washer fluid).

Good price, though Star Performance would have been slightly cheaper and include metal water pump impeller and all pullies and belts

I had my Seamaster serviced at HQ in Eastleigh as I dropped it off. ;)

I didn't have to wait 3 months though only about 2 weeks but it was

If you don't mind, what did you have done to the watches for the service to cost this much?

I'm currently undecided between a couple of Omega's, a Tag and a Breitling.

The Rolex I had for 35yrs, the service was seals, crystal(glass), worn cogs, and face clean Basically a new watch

The Omega seamaster was replacement seals, crystal, and general clean and polish, a few extra links in the wrist band as over the years it appears to have shrunk :-) ended up like brand new Though the service cost seven times my initial purchase price

They did put a new back on the watch, as I had had it poorly engraved, it came back pristine with excellent engraving (My service number and rating)

We are talking decades here, not general servicing, so Go ahead and buy

And would be on the far side of the country from where I was staying. So factor in 120 miles round trip and 2 meals out as extra costs.

That's an impressive O/T! Cambelt discussions in a watches thread! :D:thumbup:

Steve

Aye wey yer see

Ken was in awe that a watch service cost as much as his cambelt replacement and service

I advised him it would be cheaper at STAR and we drifted a bit

Thought I was in Fabia 1 and put it back on topic

Anyways about my TIMEX, I got it for

That seems quite a fair price to me. Don't know a lot about Tissot mind, but they seem to have a good name/reputation.

Can't help on the glass replacement question I'm afraid...

Someone I know's just got one similar to this bad boy

Tissot

I love that watch, my friend got one very similar to that a few years ago as a present. I loved the bracelet with the holes in it, which is one of the reasons I got the Breitling.

Can think of worse things to spend $800USD on - wouldnt dare, SWMBO would kill me and I always scratch the glass up.

Which reminds me, anyone an idea for the cost of a Citizen Ecodrive replacement glass? Mine's got very deep ugly scratches :(

I do not know a price for a replacement glass,

Have you tried T-Cut on it or BRASSO usually works a treat, or a jeweller can do it with a buff and jewellers rouge Nothing to lose unless you start T-Cutting the actual face beneath the glass ;-)
