Skoda Fabia Mk1 6Y Comfort - 00588 Active/static Driver airbag -N95-Resistance too high

Featured Replies

Hi

Seeking help please!

Issue: Dash airbag light is on

Autel Code Reader:
Original Codes:
  00532 Passive/Sporadic Supply voltage-Signal too low
  00588 Passive/Sporadic Driver airbag -N95-Resistance too high

Revised Code:

I replaced the Steering Squib (clock spring), cleared codes and I now have:
  00588 Active/static    Driver airbag -N95-Resistance too high

No wiring going to either front seat so no connection issues there.
I have not performed a resistance test on the airbag.
Current situation is I have removed airbag, steering wheel and squib so all I'm left with is the yellow connector which plugs into the squib.  I've clear the codes and re-read, fault is the same:

  00588 Active/static    Driver airbag -N95-Resistance too high

I'm wondering if there is a connection issue at the airbag ECU .......but I can't find where that is.

Or maybe I have a break in the wiring somewhere but again I've no idea where to look.

Any ideas?

Or, is my re-test above invalid and you would get that code if you unplugged the steering squib and therefore maybe I do have an airbag fault?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Tim

Airbag ECU is right at the front of the centre console tucked under the dash.

Airbag faults often set a permanent flag that cannot be cleared so you may need another ECU.

Hi, thank you.

I don't think it's a permanent code because the code text has changed once the squib was changed and we haven't had a shunt.

I've removed all the light grey 'bottom' have of the dash on the left, right and centre console and couldn't see the ECU.  What do I need to remove to reveal it's position?

Thanks

The centre console itself.

It hides underneath the bottom of the heater box (where the heater matrix lurks).

I'll dig out a photo or two.

You are going to get an error code if any part of the system is disconnected, in this case the drivers airbag. You need to reconnect everything before resetting the fault code.

You say there is no wiring going to the front seats, is N95 not the drivers seat airbag or were they not fitted at this age?

Firstly, thank you Wino, I've prised that grey shroud away and I think I found that airbag ECU.  At this stage I'm not going to disassemble any more as I have some resistors and a second hand airbag arriving and will re-test.

I've taken a photo and added an arrow in case that helps someone else.

I've also encircled the yellow connector which goes to the Steering squib/clock spring.

Christ on a bike, it's MUCH easier to just remove the centre console, you can then undo the nuts holding the ECU to the trans tunnel with a 10mm spanner.

Thank you J.R. for your comments.  First-up I did connect everything back up when I had the new squib.  That was when I had the Revised Code:  00588 Active/static    Driver airbag -N95-Resistance too high

I take your point though and maybe this does suggest I have a fault on the airbag itself.

I've got some resistors coming and a second hand airbag so I'll try these.

Just to clarify though, this is not a luxury model.  The car has two airbags only, drivers steering wheel and passenger dashboard.

Thanks, and yes, what a plonker, I went for the wrong option!  I just couldn't find any images or YouTube videos that may have helped.

Don't forget you have two seatbelt pre-tensioners as well, these are also controlled by that ECU.
